I have a 2001 ram 1500 4wd truck with a 5.9 that recently began to have front end issues. when i put it in reverse the front end feels as if it is locking up. at first i thought it was just slipping on the snow and ice, but today i drove it to a cleared empty lot and tried reverse. terrible front end feeling. as if the brakes are catching and releasing. runs fine in forward gears. whats going on with my poor truck? the truck has 90,000 miles on it and. it has a few minor issues as well, such as an evaporative emissions leak and a soft rattle at higher rpms.

Do a thourough inspection of the driveshaft/u-joints going to the front differential; and the brake calipers for loose, missing, bolts, ect. Also, check the u-joints on the front axles. I would expect more problems than just reverse if it were in the differential, itself, but might check the fluid level, just to be sure.

Hmmm? Just questions to add: Will it do this if in plain 2WD, steering straight ahead regardless of forward or reverse or only reverse? If in 4WD mode, some aren't designed to differentiate on NON slippery surfaces and feel wildly wrong on plain wet or dry surface AND steering. Not sure how this one is set up - Loren may know better on the types available for this truck,

You are absolutely right. 4X4 does not like bare pavement. Wide, gradual turns, only. Now that you mention it, it is worse backing and turning tight. I was actually able to take mine out of 4X4 today! Rain, 44F.

only in reverse. both in and out of four wheel drive. i am also in sw wa. oh, and it does it whether steering or not.

Brian; Since it does it only in reverse, I doubt that it is the differential. Are you certain that it is coming from the front? (noises can transfer and fool ya) Check those caliper mounts and the front axle U-joints. Does the noise go away with the brakes applied?

it does not go away when i brake. it also sends vibrations through my steering.

Hey, it was only the brakes. Once the snow melted and it wasn't so messy, I was able to remove the wheel and find my caliper missing a bolt. Thanks for the input, guys. Have a good 09.
