manual 89 jeep stuck in 1st gear

I have an 89 manual jeep Cherokee, 4.0 with about 180 k on engine. I drove it 100 miles without hearing any transmission problems, parked it, got in it days later and it's stuck in first gear. I tried to unjam it and drove it for three mile to a gas station mechanic and he said it's the tran. because it wont come out of gear with the engine off. I could drive it to another dude that said he would check the stick from the inside which I think I could do. Some said earlier this past summer that I would have to replace the clutch. What could be the problem? there is play in the stick, it just wont come out of first.

It may be something not so serious like a broken or worn shift fork.
