My 1990 mazda miata began to have clutch issues on the way home. It began at a red light when i tried to shift into first it refused to go. i had to play with it for about 45 seconds and push it in for it to go into gear. When i got home i started it up and tried again. I went around the block about 4 times with it acting normal then all of a sudden the gear froze. When the car is off i can shift gears freely but when i try to turn it on when it is in gear it surges forward. When the car is on started in neutral it refuses to go into any gear. The clutch was replaced around a year ago. my oil cap was off for some reason and it was sprayed on the top of the hood and leaking around it. Might be a oil contaminated clutch but, i dont know. I also just made a 260 miles round trip in it.

You likely have a leak in the hydraulic system and it has run out of brake fluid and now has air in the system. You need to find out which component is leaking, replace it and bleed out the system.

my clutch pedal has never had to have more than about 1 pound of pressure to push down. Did it not get bled enough?

If that was the case you would've had this issue back when the clutch was replaced. You either have a bad slave cylinder, bad master cylinder or bad throwout bearing. Possibly a leak in the line between master and slave too. But as HT said, you need to get in and look to see what is going on.

Pretty sure it is my slave cylinder. The reservoir is nearly empty. The fluid is black. So i'm going to change it myself. Ill let you know how it goes. I'm an amateur but, it shouldn't be too hard. its on the other side of passenger side tire.

How did you conclude it was the slave?

It had all the common symptoms on a bad slave cylinder after doing some research. Some of which has been going on since i got the car, a couple years ago.

Common symptoms?????????

You mean it leaked? Where does it say that the slave is the only place it can leak?

Pedal is loose and squeaky,(i know the squeak could just be the pedal needs oiled,) Has been since i got the car, I just replaced clutch about a year ago and topped it off with fluid. Now it is empty so yes it has a leak. Not necessarily the slave but, it is most common. Won't know until i get under there. The gears slipped from time to time even after the clutch was replaced. From what i read this could be due to oxygen getting in though a crack in slave cylinder. The master cylinder reservoir is still full. So i imagine it is not that.

If you can't explain a flaw in my logic good riddance. I came here for advice not an annoyance.
