1979 bmw 318i, automatic transmission stopped functioning while driving (a slight, high pitch metallic sound preceded the breakdown). When I added 1 quart of the fluid it preformed normally.
Next time after about a mile (same sound again), breaks down again. Added half a quart of fluid and transmition returns to normal.
I am afraid to drive too far, could the transmission fluid filter blockage cause the malfunction?

Re: old bmw Sign In

Is the level going low and you are adding fluid to bring it up to the correct level or are you just adding fluid?

The noise is concerning, even a low trans shouldn't make a noise like that. Plugged filters can cause some erratic problems but then again not usually noises like you described.....

Honestly it would probably be best to have someone who is familiar with BMW transmissions to look at it, considering you can't even drive it a mile without problems. I'll let you decide the best means to getting to a shop but I would really question a decision on driving it there........
