tranny leak Sign In

oldsmobile
96 bravada
awd
v6

so lately i noticed something was making a small spot on my driveway and it turned out the tranny was leaking in the back
its only dripping a little but i checked it and the fluid was low
so i went to the store and but lucas. is there an easier way to get it into the trannsmission because its so thick that i cant even tell what the level is because when i put the dipstick in it is on the whole thing when i pull it out and it doesnt seem to go in fast.
i also noticed a clicking sound resently while driving even when coasting in neutral but not at idle. is this at all related to the trann fluid being low. thanks for your help

! I didn't know they made a super thick snake oil additive for auto trans fluid! Are you sure you have the right product you wanted?

None the less - snake oil fixes are usually just that and some cause problems. Is it leaking right at the seal where driveshaft goes into the rear of trans? That seal can be replaced. Clicking may be a u-joint - feel for freeplay and look for strange dust on them OR remove for better inspection of those,

Re: tranny leak Sign In

well actually i have a couple of friends who all swear by the lucas tranny fluid and they all say it will save a transmission if it goes low. it even says so on the bottle and no it looks more like it is leaking from the the seals kind of were you drain it at. but im not so much worried about the leak as much as i am worried if i hurt anything else. this is because while driving with the window down you can hear a loud popping and i was thinking the transfercase. I think it cycles the fluid from the tranny to the case. also the fluid that dripped out seems to be dark brown like burned transmission fluid which would explain the burned rubber smell. do you think the tranny is to far gone.
thanks for everything

>> it even says so on the bottle<<

Their mission in life is to sell product with no assurance that it can do anything. Would you buy it if it said it would fail?

I am worried about the noise - that is no doubt something worn or broken. Leaks can just be leaks to be fixed. An example is overtightening a common trans pan will cause it to leak - the type that will bend with the bolts. If something like that it need to be removed and fixed not a bottle of goo.

Which fluid or oil was "burnt?" That's always a bad sign. If ATF dipstick color is good and a drip is burned then you may be looking at the wrong fluid. The smell could be just drips on hot exhaust - dunno and that's not conclusive by itself,
