transaxle fifth gear problem Sign In

1.6 diesel, fifth gear manual transaxle

Hi
I can not enter my fifth gear on the highway. The car stay on neutral and there is no resistance when I shift to the fifth gear. I was driven on the higway and sudently nothing work, without advise.

I verify the linkage and enter the fifth gear manualy. The car stay at his neutral. I didn't verify the level of oil, but I don't think that it is the problem because it is a manual. The clutch work well on the four first gear and I can use the reverse. I have problem with my reverse, mostly when the weather is cold (minus 20°C).

I worry about any further problem because I drive my car on the first four gear. I don't have the money to go to a mechanical, so I have to fix it myself.

Thanks.

Jacques

Someone tell me that my transmission was low on lube and the fifth gear was running dry and the temperature soften the metal. So, I have to replace some the fifth gear to fix it. Any suggestion

If this guy is right, you have internal damage that can only be fixed by overhauling the transmission. If thats too expensive, look for a good used one and replace all the oil seals prior to installing it. Putting synthetic lube in it wouldn't hurt either.

Hi
The guy was right. I remove the 5th gear, which turned freely on is axe, and the synchroniser, which was severly broken at three places. I did it on the car, without removing the transaxle. I needed some special tool. I took to much time trying to find a way to do it. I buy the gear in a scrap yard for 23 canadian dollar.
