transmission noise Sign In

my 1997 f150 4x4 is hitting very hard whenever it downshifts, especially coming out of overdrive back into fourth. it is a 4.6 motor with over 100k miles on the motor and 208k miles on the tranny. any ideas?

It's probably due for a rebuild. Have it checked at a reputable trans shop.

Overdrive is 4th gear on a 4R70W. You probably mean you have a harsh 4-3 downshift. That transmission takes Mercon, but was phased out a while back. The replacement fluid is Mercon V.

Got to know what is wrong with it and what it would take to fix it to give you a rough estimate on what it would cost to fix it.

The cost of overhauling depends on the labor rate the shop charges and the markup they put on parts. You'll have to call around to get an average price.
