I have a 2000 gmc jimmy 4X4 w/4.3 litre automatic with towing pkg. I started my jimmy and put it in reverse. I could hear a whine but couldnt move. I put it into drive and was ok for a few feet then it started whining. I was stuck in first gear. I limped for 3 miles to get home. I crawled under it and found a hole that a plug of sorts used to go into. Is my fix as simple as replacing the plug and the lost fluid? Could I have damaged it in those 3 miles home? My jimmy has 260000 miles. Is it worth a major repair? What is a ballpark price for a new or used tranny and where might a good place be to look for one.

Ouch..., That was really bad for it. You could try replacing the "plug and fluid", but you will probably be looking at a new/used tranny. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

By this I think you mean I need to repair it myself or replace it. I have changed a transmission on an Astro van before but not a 4X4. I have had it towed to Edwards transmissions in my town. I may ask something again after talking with them. It's hard to trust a transmission shop because I've heard so many bad things about them. I just found your site today, i drive 65000 miles per year. I have a feeling I'll be back again soon. Thanks for your speedy answer!

Shop said 18-2800 bucks! I went to pick a part and found one for 135. It was the third one I pulled the pan on. No shavings and good fluid. It took 11 hours to get it out. I brought it home and switched it out. Hardest thing I've ever done. It's all back together now but there's a problem. Although the tranny will shift from ITS linkage, when I hook it up my shifter(automatic on the console) will not move. The button on the side wont push in. Will the nuetral safety switch cause this? I was told by a trusted mechanical type friend that if I could manually shift the tranny from beneath the truck the safety switch was good and he said he was certain. He said probably linkage adjustment or a pinched cable or maybe wiring. I would like your opinion though. Also when the battery is dead or disconnected it doesnt shift so could this safety feature be involved in some way?

Yes.., It could be a adjustment for the shift interlock system or a binding cable. -------------------------------------------------------- Your only as good as your tools!

Well its been a month or so and my cable linkage is still not right. I have re-re-re-readjusted it and I gues that's not the trouble. If I ram it into park(not real hard, just kinda hard) it is fine. If not it will work for 3 or 4 shifts into park and then I have to reach under and do it with my hand. Then if I go hard again I'm ok. My guess id a bound or stretched cable?
