I have a '03 Chevy Avalanche...i had to rebuild the transmission because clutch plates were burnt up, so i replaced the clutch plates and gaskets then i put it all back together, now it shifts fine and drives fine but when i put it in neutral it makes a whirring sound kind of like something is spinning...any ideas on what could be causing this?

I don't have a real good answer for you but will offer a couple of suggestions..... The 1st would be to try to narrow down where exactly the noise is coming from.... If it's coming from inside the trans for sure then that would be good. Double check all the external stuff you can, converter bolts, make sure the cover is secure barring that, the trans may have to come out. Depending on how hot it got something may have warped or overheated a bearing. If this was a manual trans, I would say it was a bad main shaft bearing, that's when they would make nosie, when all the loads were off & it was in neutral...........
