Emissions testing

In Michigan we currently don't require emissions testing. In fact I almost never see a vehicle with an air pump. Just curious about the whole deal. In places where emission testing is required, do most shops have the equipment to test? Or is it specialized enough that its usually separate testing facilities? Im assuming that you probably replace quite a few pumps, 02 sensors, and cataysts? I wish Michigan would require testing, as I see alot of vehicles that have been poorly maintained and leads to worse issues, alot of faulty 02 sensors get ignored and fuel economy suffers, spark plugs and wires dont get changed and plugs seize into heads and or break off, etc. Thoughts? Just would like to hear from experience in case laws change or I move. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

Not sure exactly what you are asking here but most all of those things are going to trigger a CEL and that would get fixed in any state.Having state inspection isn't a deciding factor for any of this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

If a vehicle is running well and no CEL is on it's probably fine. You can't really mess with all the controls or it wouldn't run properly. Testing as a routine state by state isn't really the point - it wouldn't run properly, use more fuel so things should be in working order laws or not, T

I guess I didnt phrase that correctly. 1. In places where testing is required, do most shops have testing equipment and certifications or is testing usually done at specialized testing facilities? 2. What repairs are common when a vehicle fails emissions? (I know each vehicle has to be diagnosed based on its symptoms, just wondering if there are certain repairs that are often needed to pass testing.) ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... That differs in every state. Some states operate the testing facilities and some states use independent shops. As for the cause of failure, just about anything in the operating system can cause a failure.

I'm in MA where once they would dyno test vehicles and a sniffer in tailpipe deal. They quit that for just reading OBDII codes and physically observe/check a list of things. Pre OBDII vehicles just need not be blowing smoke out tailpipe - all must pass all safety items. What are you trying to do? If no codes stored AND runs well it should be fine. Not all shops do state inspections but most will check that it's ready to go. Any safety failures the car isn't technically legal to drive on a public road. Emission failures you have 30 days to correct at any place you wish and retests are free once then you start over, T
