I'm looking for some interesting repair tips - on any subject. Just things folks do to make repairs/maintenance easier or interesting fixes. Anybody got any go-to tricks that they want to share? Appreciate it.

Here's one. If you need to keep the car door open for a long time and you can't switch off the dome light independently, wedge a tennis ball between the door edge and the light switch. It will keep the light off and reduce battery drain.

Been a while so I'll add one of my preventative tricks. Rust - a huge issue for vehicles exposed to road salt or ocean salt but can happen over time anywhere. Some of the easiest things you can do to save tons of time is to grease up flare nuts, hose collars, tubing connections for lots of things throughout a vehicle such that line doesn't break when and if you need to go there. Example: (This a brake hose to a metal line with its holder) In one way or another these are all over a vehicle and a nightmare to undo when rusted. The crimp collars can even rust such that hose blows off! These are everywhere, brakes, fuel lines, evaporative fuel lines, power steering, transmission and more. I use either or both a flux brush with silicone grease or spray white lithium grease and a decade later these will come apart without breaking them. Should still know how to replace these and make your own lines as needed but helps if old ones will come out. T

Thanks - things like this are what I'm looking for. Trying to compile a list of things people do to make life easier for them while they're working on their cars. Anything anyone has is appreciated.

As Sidom mentioned there are hundreds of cool ideas archived in this section right now. You can do a search just within the forums - choice below will say "search the web or search this site." No harm in asking for specific vehicle tricks either. Especially some common stuff like how the heck do I get at those dang spark plugs that I can't even see! Have fun with it, T

One of the best tips i give is to approach each job with a clean slate , a fresh mind. While its good to have a hunch , gut feeling etc , don't let it give you tunnel vison. t've seen guys dig themselves a deep hole , determined to prove their point . To make the problem match their solution when the fix is stareing them in the face . Us age challenged techs call it "can't see the forest for the trees". LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

A bit old on the thread, isn't it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Some things we should be done at home on a monthly basis like checking the car's lights, including headlights, marker lights, brake lights and tail lights, checking vehicle's tire pressure, checking the oil levels to ensure your engine has a sufficient amount of motor oil etc.
