Spinning Lug Nuts
|
|
|
Have an old boat trailer and can't get 2 lug nuts off. Stud is spinning. I tried drilling ut stud and broke 3 hard drill bits doing so. I was wondering if I should try this cutter from HF? Yes - that tool should do but take the whole hub off not from the view shown. Those studs are not going to let go and are like a flat rivet if you take wheel and hub off together cut off the back. Hub is junk now anyway and should be readily available whole thing. Bring it with you to match up. There's just a couple sizes in that general weight class, 5 lug common pattern. Said, bring it and the bearing as they can be sure #s cross over and are right for the axle. Note: The stud is barbed to hold it in hub so if spinning a new one wouldn't work. If you don't want to separate it with tools or buy even that for a one time use bring the whole thing to a shop and torches (oxy/acet) would have that off wheel in seconds. Whole wheel and tire isn't that expensive either if needed and might be as seen from the back? T

Can't bring to shop as it's flat. Maybe I should just pay someone to come cut them off with torch?

You said "Boat Trailer" - I've owned many exactly like that on up. If you don't know how to routinely deal with bearings on a boat trailer learn how. You don't even need a jack just a log or wood, lift from hitch end, place wood or whatever under trailer boat and all for that size if on it and let it down, wheel comes up. Friend - if you really use a boat or it was you grease up bearings constantly as many times the whole thing will get dunked to launch a boat and water will get in. Same store would have them if still using for a boat called "Bearing Buddies" that fill the whole hub with grease under spring pressure so water CAN'T get in. IDK - I always brought a grease gun with me especially if salt water it's a must do or you are screwed with failed wheels and bearings. A jack would be fine too even scissor jacks for many cars and blocks of wood or what I said works. Quite seriously - if you don't know how to deal with a trailer hub and it's bearing and want to tow anything - even just a brush trailer you have to know how to tend to it. As simple as they are they are totally dangerous to have a wheel fly off and lose control vehicle and all. It would cost more but bet U-Haul by name if any near you would tend to it but it shouldn't be hard nor expensive unless trailer is total junk in general now, T

Got an idea. If selling it on a local site for things of the sort go there now and find at whole wheel and hub together or pair ready to go as it could use that much if better than another. Folks make things from old trailers or part them out all the time. If not interested in all the fuss depending on condition just junk it. You can buy these new and whole lighter duty for about a grand so there's not much bucks in them until you get larger - brakes and more gets specific. Check out yours vs what's out there now is what I'd do if you don't want it, T

This is a small trailer with no brakes. What you can do to get the wheel off is to weld the stud in position from the back. First remove the whole hub and wheel through the wheel bearing and then once off you will have easy access to the rear of the stud. You can weld the stud in place so you can get the nut off. After that I would just get a new hub to put back on. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That's it. Remove the nut and outer bearing and the whole thing comes right off.

They make some special pliers to grab it and rock it off but you can carefully tap it off with a hammer. Try not to dent it too much.
