needing advice

Have a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland V8 4.7HO. This was not a daily driver vehicle. My late husband always marked the oil filter with change date and mileage which shows 5/08, 66,200. I allowed my son to borrow the car  (big mistake) and got it back several months ago. The car has been in storage till I got it out recently and am now trying to get it back into good driving shape. The engine starts and sounds fine, but when a trusted friend got ready to change the oil it was clear the oil looks like it had not been changed since my son borrowed it. The vehicle has 94,800 miles on it now. The oil has the consistency of thick molasses with some lumps. My question to anyone wiser than myself,  what would you suggest I do to clean up the thick oil that may have gummed up in the engine. I am also concerned about the oil pump suction tube screen. Any suggestions on how to correct and prevent any potential engine problems. The first action I have committed to is never letting my son borrow any vehicle!! Thank you for your suggestions.

You have a very tough and serious issue now. The first thing i would do is immediately change to oil, run it 15 minutes and then change it again. Repeat this a few time while increasing the running time up to about 500 miles. Then just return to normal oil changes at reduced interval. Sludge is one of the most harmful and hard to cure problems you can have. It's usually terminal for an engine.

Do as said there's a chance just overdoing oil changes A LOT can clean it up if no hard damage now. I'd avoid any kind of flushing as too much crud all at once WILL be the demise.
Bought a vehicle with the problem b/c I wanted it so bad and took ages but it cleaned up, was noisy but it all went away without mechanical problems but that was some luck and fast correction. The new oil should have enough cleaning additives but slowly can work. Toss up on each case,

Thank you, I'm hoping repeated oil changes and some TLC will prevent any terminal problems. Good advice, I will take it to heart.
