1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

Don't know where to begin cleanup of old car in a small farm shed. Mice, pigeon droppings, no wheels on it (but have them). Dirty job. Want to move car to town but don't want to move mice to my garage there. Any help appreciated!
suz

Forgot to say there is no water or electricity at farm. All have to be hauled in. Frown

Sorry. I personally live in Florida and don't do pest extermination, so I can't help you clean up mice and pigeon poo. I can cheer you on from here though...LOL

Rodents living in it are not likely to move with it but who knows? They don't like noise and should scatter.

Some things that may or may not work short of a real barn cat meant just for that are:

Bait bags - poison so careful if used.
Moth balls a maybe.
Noise as said.

IMO just moving it should do and clean up current nests looking for new ones,

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

Thanks for advice. I'm not really a farm person...more small town, and you are probably right they (mice) will scatter!!! But it is really gross. Not looking forward to the job....so kinda just starting to get psched up about it.

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

The problem can exist about anywhere. Car collectors go to great lengths to avoid this disaster. I store a couple and use rat poison bags and freak if I find one touched!

Grandparents generation were real farmers. Total solution was a cat - no joke on my avatar. You didn't feed it on purpose. If it finished with all the mice/rodents it left. Not a pet that was a game needed.

Back some. These things are usually making nests and have a food source right where they are now that would be common to active barns or farming or even leaving pet food around or who knows. I really think it would mess them up to be in a new location and would leave or not even be on board for the tow to where it goes.

Can't if this thing is all apart but once a discussion here that turning a vehicle around and or not parking in the same spot was effective!

I've had NO damage myself but do use rat poison pellets. No promises but it's supposed to not kill common pets or worse a child as it would make you vomit and FYI the rodent family of creatures can't. Might make a pet sick but not supposed to cause real harm and can't prove that.

It's a real problem urban or rural living. Try something if taking on a project anyway if stored where at risk.

Good luck. I doubt one size fits all for this problem,

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

Sounds good to me. The hardest part is just taking the first step, if you know what I mean. Just getting it out of the shed. Then it will probably all fall into place. One step at a time, right. Gee I hate mice, oh and forgot to mention that once it gets above 60 degrees there could be rattle snakes. I hate them too. Am whining for sure! Sorry.

Hmmm? Don't snakes eat mice? Maybe you'll get them both - not funny. Good luck,

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

Throw a few boxes of mothballs inside and around the car a few days before you go to move it out. Obviously keep a good eye for snakes, they might be coiled up in the frame or in the cab. If the snakes were regularly in the car, I doubt the mice would be. But mice hate moth balls. Another possible idea before you do it. If your friend has a cat or you do, empty the litterbox under the car. Predator urine has a distinct odor to prey animals and they may choose to vacate just from that.

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

Depending if the barn has electric you could also get one of those silent mouse devices which get plugged into an outlet and tends to annoy the mice so they leave the area, also making a lot of noise. Being in florida I would be cautious about the snakes, since they do eat mice, and could be in the area..

But as someone pointed out not sure if the mice would be there if a snake was around, but maybe the droppings you are finding are from the past residences.

She's not in Florida Carmine (thank God). We don't need any more snakes............LOL She is in Montana. Be very careful with those rattlers. Don't put your hands under anything. Stand back whenever you lift anything. God I hate snakes...........

If you know someone who is a fan of old cars but you really can't stand them, ask them to help you get the car out of the garage. Either you will get the car out, which is a good thing, or someone you don't like gets gnawed into by a rattler.

Its a win-win

Already have both. We are talking almost abandoned farm. Lotsa critters. And years (been sitting since the 50s) of dirt, poop, inside destroyed. I think hiring someone is sounding better all the time!

Re: 1935 Ford Sedan Sign In

OK - We've covered the critter challenge so what do you want to do with this shell of a car? Do it up or part it out?

Wasn't mine but was asked to do up a '36 Buick Convertible, (price was about no object with owner) that had sat for ages and ages in a non functioning barn but known from when purchased new! Nothing fabric left but 100% rust free, rare car IMO w clock, rumble seat (just springs left for seats anywhere) but just parked after a death in that family.

I couldn't do it for love nor money as the only thing was a total dismantle and build back as new. That was rare and done right would have fetched some serious bucks. Done wrong would have been a net loss!

Was almost exactly this car..........

Worst problem for me is I'm in Eastern 1/3 of MA and nobody but nobody anywhere near that I know of could do the upholstery to exact specs stuffing and all or don't touch it. Engine turned and just told owner it was worth doing but not by me,

Take out some life insurance and line up a nice young doctor who thinks your daughter is cute. Then just hope the snakes don't disappoint. Might also want there to be no cell phone reception where you are going.

Hmmm. Thinking here.

Send me a picture of your daughter and let me know when you get the car out.
