1948 Desoto electrical issue Sign In

1948 Desoto still 6 volt. Driving at night a few days ago and all the lights suddenly went out on the car. The car did not lose power. It kept driving quite nicely. 30 seconds later the lights came back on. 30 seconds later the lights went back off. This continued for the next 10 minutes until I got home. The next day I started the car and let it run for 20 minutes or so with the lights on. Nothing happened. However, I put my hand on the light switch under the panel and noticed that it was quite hot. Is this perhaps a sign that my light switch is going out? Maybe a bigger problem? Also, if my light switch is going out, are light switches volt specific? Thanks.

Hi neighbor again! "Are the switches volt specific?" -- IMO the 6v systems were so strong they could take 12v no problem. Guess that headlight switch is also for dimming dash lights which I think was universally a rheostat (sp?) which did make heat. For the moment I do think your headlight switch is highly suspect.

If (done it) 6v bulbs get a surge and can with a faulty voltage regulator the bulbs will blow like the old Sylvania Blue Dot flash bulbs!

Check your running voltage. Bulbs don't heal and not sure if they would shut down if voltage too high but bet not. I am, we are with you but you know there's limited exact info as to what to check where. I tend to think the headlight switch would be likely but can't be sure,

everything is gettin old , loose ,corroded connections. the headlite circuit has a auto reset breaker. It was mandated by federal govt to give someome with electrical problems in the headlite system a chance to get off highway. You may have exceded the capacity of the switch,.

Had the same problem with my 37 plymouth coupe headlight switch getting hot. One of the guys in my car club suggested installing a headlight relay switch. Once installed, the only current flowing through the headlight switch is enough to activate the relay and dash lights. Works great and I've had no more problems with my 6 volt system headlight switch overheating.
