Hi, folks.

I have a 1948 Desoto, 6 volt positive ground charging system. I've replaced the battery twice in the last 2 months. I bought it new. When I brought it back to Autozone, I was told the battery was no good. They replace it for free therefore on one hand, it's no big deal. Nevertheless, am I buying "bad" batteries perhaps?(It's Duralast) If so, is there a recommended brand? Also, when I turn the headlights on, the Amp meter shows major discharging until I increase the RPMs. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is belt to generator tight enough? I own a 6v pos ground vehicle and find Napa seems to have the best. This could be a generator issue and if clever you can take it apart and clean off the brushes or have it done at an alternator/starter motor rebuilding shop, -- pos or neg ground is near irrelevant.

PS: Brushes are carbon pilings not paint brushes. They need good contact. You can clean surfaces if brushes are still ok wil super fine sand paper. Was somewhat routine back when as if I'm old enough to remember! Laugh!

Hey Tom.

Your advice has always been great. In my haste to post my problem, I forgot to mention that there is a noise (grinding/arcing)coming from the voltage regulator. I know this may seem basic. But then again, so am I. :-) Thanks.

If you can find a new voltage reg just replace it. Believe it or not you can fix the old one! Depending on case it can be like putting a bottle cap back on tightly. There should be points in there not unlike a distributor's. Cleanable (point file- fingernail file might suffice) and adjustable!
