1950 Chevy VIN #??? Sign In

Hey guys I’m thinking of picking up this 1950 Chevy DeLuxe 2 door sedan.
All I know about it at this point is that it’s supposedly an “all original” in-line 216cu” six cylinder with a manual three speed column shift.
It was last painted 5 years ago and the guy has told me that yes there is some body filler that he put in it at that time; “less then ½ gallon” to smooth out the patches in the rocker panels?
I’ve been given the VIN but all I’ve been able to decode is that it was likely built in Oshawa Ontario Canada?
All the web sites that I have found only talk about US built cars; so that’s where I need your guys help?
Here’s the VIN # 0101104924
This is the second Canadian built Chevy from the same era that I’ve found and there are no letters in either of these vehicles VIN numbers? The US sites all claim that there are letters in their VIN’s?

Yes I see the date stamp in the pictures and I quizzed the owner; He said he didn’t know how to adjust the camera and the pictures were supposedly taken last summer?

Dan.

I don't think that is a VIN, but a serial number.
The first digit 0 is the year or 1950
The next four digits 1011 is the body model number which means 2 door sedan.
The rest of the numbers is the production sequence.

From reading the information on that site the 216 engine only had 29 HP Shocked. Wouldn't come off an on ramp with that unless you want the trunk in the front seat.

Thanks Guys!

With this being a Canadian built car the VIN/Serial number is one and the same. I’m about 90% sure of that because when I ran these numbers for a lien check; those were the numbers they (Ministry of Transportation) wanted to track the sales history on the car. And that only goes back as for as 1988; before that the Ministry got their taxes out of us just by using a hand written bill of sale from the previous owner. Now a days anything over thirty years old must have an appraisal done by a registered appraiser; that’s so they can dig us the tax on the vehicle’s value not what you actually paid. YEA I KNOW IT”S A RIPOFF BY OUR GOVERNEMNT!!!!! Sorry short rant is over; back to the car.
GM Canada didn’t follow the same VIN/Serial number format; why is anyone’s guess??
What you guys have shown me is all that I’ve been able to find as well.
I do know that the 216cu” actually has a whopping 90HP rating; now that’ll make her fly. LOL
Going for a 12 hour round trip ride this afternoon and check the car out; hauling a trailer with me just in case it’s as clean as what it looks in the pictures?

Dan.

Dan - hard about to tell you anything but try to know extent of rust which will return. Magnets can help. Best of luck with a fun car and project,

Tom

Re: 1950 Chevy VIN #??? Sign In

Well I’m now the Proud (?) owner of this 1950 Chevy and yea Tom a magnet is your best friend when thinking of buying an old beater like this.
I did find some body filler here and there but nothing that the magnet wouldn’t still stick and hold on its own.
For a 62 year old car it’s fairly strait with most body lines holding true. The under body is solid and relatively rust free. The frame is like new under the ½ inch of oil undercoating that has been applied over the years.
Engine runs good; but I am going to have to pull the intake manifold and have it milled true and the gasket replaced. The engine has a bit of a shudder at idle and I found the intake runner to cylinder head gasket leaking vacuum; causing cylinders 1 & 2 to run lean.
Other then that it has good oil pressure; she’s not puffing oil smoke and has a fair amount of power. The surprising thing is that it has the 235cu” in it rather then the 216? I asked the guy I bought the car from if he knew when the larger engine was installed and he said it was the original (size)? He then went on and told me that because it’s a Canadian built car they all got the 235? I haven’t been able to prove or disprove that as of yet?
So far I’m pleased with the car and may fix up the minimum for now and drive her the way she is? If I find the thing (drive train) to be problematic, I’ll then think of what to do with her; restore to original or customize with a mid 2000’s drive train?

Dan.

Dan ,if i read this right ,the 216 was standard for manual tranny and the 235 standard for the auto. Suppose you could interchange them.

I'd put a blown 350 with a powerglide behind it. That will really wake that car up. You'll be having hot Canadian chicks lining up to take ride.

Ummmm... maybe this will fit? Gosh...that is so beautiful. I have tears in my eyes.

Good luck Dan no matter what you do or change. Don't know this car first hand but like RT said engines should be swappable if you care.

Personally I wouldn't change it to a newer engine but it's your car so do as you want. Should be plain OHV engine and simple. Three on the tree shifter won't be synced for first gear - owned many and if you get used to it you can downshift to first by double clutching which I bet you already know or can explain.

Looks like a nice ride - enjoy.

I can't here but try to find fuel if alcohol is used where you are in it as carb gaskets hate it! They do sell solvents that claim to reverse the ill effects but who knows if it works?

Bet you know that brake linings and gaskets can be make by hand or used to be able to?

Tom (ask away, I have some sources for old Sh!t) - (Holy Sh!t - I AM an old Sh!t!)
