I recently took my 2012 Chevy Sonic to a local mechanic because my car was idling rough and I was getting bad gas mileage also my service light would remain on. Shortly after leaving my car I received a call saying that from the codes showing and what he could see by looking at my vehicle the problem would be covered under my powertrain warranty. When I arrived the mechanic showed me how putting pressure over a certain area cause a hissing sound. He said it sounded like a ruptured pcv valve. I made arrangements with the dealership that I bought my car from. The person handling my repairs called and stated that my car was showing 2 codes ( which I already had been told before visiting the dealership.) And that only 1 of the codes was covered under the powertrain warranty, that was for the valve cover. He said that the second code was related to a PCV hose that was not covered by the powertrain warranty. The parts # is 25193343, when I googled this it comes up GM OEM-Pvc OE Value $ 44.94 and this part of the repair would cost me 370. Over 250.00 of this would be labor charges. is this correct? Is the dealership allowed to charge the customer for labor when the service is covered under warranty? The price I was given is about what a local mechanic will charge to do the entire job. Could you please assist me with this issue.

? I'd chase this down with what is the real warranty and what was really wrong. Aftermarket the PCV shows ~$10. and the grommets to valve cover ~$4. Multiply that by 2 for dealer prices. Not there can't know but if PCV was plain knocked off/out of its mount it would set of codes and run like crap. The real warranty wouldn't pay for a mistake is someone just checking it like at oil change times left it loose or off. This being about 5 years old IMO this stuff doesn't easily go bad. It would be a long read what is or isn't covered by warranty so you do both need to know exactly what was done to get the bill up that high at a glance outrageous. Warranty work is cute - it isn't going to pay for stuff they are really stuck for so there is incentive to add to covered things. Again - you really need an explanation of just what they fixed. If you ignored a check engine light or equivalent warning to make something simple worse they could have a case to charge more to fix subsequent problems from that, T

Thank you so much for your info. No one had done any work to the car. Machanic made sure to show me where the issue was and explained that it would void my warranty it it wasn't serviced by the service department for my car. The car hasn't been driven regularly for several. Months because I have a second vehicle and was trying to save mileage on this car. The representative did not say this was a problem caused by being knocked loose so anyones neglect just that the part needed to be replaced and was not covered under warranty. I've also contacted GM for there assistance finding out why the labor was so high. Again thank you!

OK - You were shown where the problem is/was - good. Now why was that so costly? I can't know exactly what's listed for time allowed for what. Warranty would be going by the book only + too bad for the mechanic if it was longer than that to do. True most of the time if YOU or another messed with it can void that item for warranty. It's not necessarily some problem about it yet but does smell like a fish to me. FYI: Warranty work is done at a much lower allowed and agreed upon rate than if you just went in off any warranty but either way do the right thing(s) and be fair - all concerned. I'm not looking at what this was just the age and what could be likely - I'm thinking of a rubber elbow hose that might cost a few bucks did in fact fail in some manner to leak hence the hiss you heard and it would. That on some (can't know every possible snag for what should be simple for every vehicle ever made) you just take that off and suggest a new grommet(s) as well and a new PCV valve fine - most are good for decades but get replaced at oil changes IMO way too often. Talk to service manager or contact GM with info in owner's manual if no luck. You IMO deserve an explanation of why this ended up costing that and was on YOU not covered as per wording in warranty. FYI - it is involving emissions and operation of the engine even if a silly rubber hose enough to raise all hell. Don't give up. Keep moving up the chain of decision makers till you are happily convinced or reimbursed for amounts in excess, T

Thanks again. I have contacted GM. And they assigned me a case # and assigned it to a senior advisor. They advised me to contact the dealership and have them hold off on the warranty work until they could speak to them about the reason for the cost. Im waiting on there reply. And yes with it involving emissions in my state I can not get it inspected till this work is completed. I logged onto You Tube and all the videos showing how to replace the parts show time being less then 1 hour. That is if the replacement parts are similar to the Chevy Cruze. There seems to be some talk of issues with the valve cover on that particular model. I'll keep you posted on what they ce back with.

Sounds great so far. Do now keep track of all receipts, phone calls and who you spoke with. The "valve cover" itself issue IDK? If that somehow caused a failure you may be on to a recall and fix. When communicating if not already asked have your VIN# ready. If it's not corrected and a light is on for "service engine" or "check engine" light or symbol driving this could seriously harm your catalytic converter which would get costly. If not running perfectly it almost definitely is so avoid that if the case. Good luck, Tom

It looks like I'm stuck paying the bill for the additional work. What's really sad is I went to GM customer care. And she was either not educated enough to know the reason this isn't cover. ( She kept referring to this as a coolant hose) Or she just didnt want to be honest. I went to another Chevy dealership and he explained why this wasn't covered. After 2010 they changed the chevy power train warranty to cover less. And since the part I needed is considered an external pipe/hose it was no longer cover. And the dealerships are independent from GM. So they are allowed to charge the labor for this as 2 sep. issues. Here's the difference. Engine: 2010 Chevrolet vehicles All internally lubricated parts, engine oil cooling hoses, lines and radiators. Also included are all actuators and electrical components internal to the engine (i.e., Active Fuel Management Valve Lifter Oil Manifold, etc.), cylinder head, block, timing gears, timing chain, timing cover, oil pump/oil pump housing, OHC carriers, valve covers, oil pan, seals, gaskets, manifolds, flywheel, water pump, harmonic balancer, engine mount, starter motor, turbocharger and supercharger. Timing belts are covered until the first scheduled maintenance interval. Exclusions: Excluded from the powertrain coverage are sensors, wiring, connectors, engine radiator, coolant hoses, coolant and heater core. Coverage on the engine cooling system begins at the inlet to the water pump and ends with the thermostat housing and/or outlet that attaches to the return hose. Also excluded are the entire pressurized fuel system (in-tank fuel pump, pressure lines, fuel rail(s), regulator, injectors and return line) as well as the Engine/Powertrain Control Module and/or module programming. Powertrain Warranty: 2012 • Gasoline engines - Cylinder Block and heads, and all internal parts, intake manifold, timing gears, timing gear chain or belt and cover, flywheel, harmonic balancer, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, engine mounts, seals, and gaskets, water pump; also turbocharger and supercharger housings and internal parts, valves, seats, and gaskets. • Transmission - Case and all internal parts, torque converter, vacuum modulator, seals and gaskets and transmission mounts, also transfer case and all internal parts, seals and gaskets. You would think that they would make a law against double billing for services. Even though the dealership did nothing illegal it's u still not god business. After I have my car back I do plan on posting reviews on every site that is linked to this dealership And the warranty changes over the years. Maybe the next time someone needs warranty work they will ask questions before hand. Thanks again for all your help.

Wow! You've been busy and did find some info in the last post looks about like their type writing/wording for things. I couldn't possibly keep up with the changes from what was pretty uniform for decades on mostly how many months and miles what would be covered by the car maker done their way at their set rates. Just chat now as this may be a stopper for you or a never ending game of switching who's really going to fix this much better than it is? Hey - Long time ago now worked for a new car dealer. Anything to do with warranty things - first year even with super low miles the manufacturer was putting the screws to the dealership which was privately owned but to carry the brand a pile of rules had to be met. Use only their own parts was a constant hassle or would take ages to acquire. I was the newest there so go new car warranty work as it paid crap didn't matter as for a new hire you were paid by the hour whether there was work or not some % of what you did - yet. Small town type place - people knew everyone and was the only new car dealer of any brand. Whatever: I didn't stay there it was all just this headache crap not doing your trade (the job) perfectly as possible never a thought of playing head games with customers -OLD SCHOOL THINKING on my part. They just bought a new car and it's screwed up with something felt serious obligation to make it perfect as new should be. That didn't go over too well with ownership. In short they ended up with about an hour's notice I can't work that way. Different situation in many ways - dealership was getting seriously known for this and I really didn't want my name on that place. Independent shop right across the street just heard of this and hired me instantly. That shop had the best reputation anywhere around always busy. Way too busy and way too many hours for me to last too long at that pace did leave as I couldn't take 6 day work weeks always over 10 hours usually 12 a day - place was too small to hire another full time tech seriously needed if only room to park more cars! Different days - fine print didn't count if you worked on it you took full responsibility - period. Back to some reality. Today if you pushed this with enough documentation could make this a big mess maybe to legal with the place and actually waste a ton of your time ends up not worth it and could drag out forever. ******************* I think you've already accomplished what you can do that's practical even if it's not fair and you are convinced - seem to be move on Just be clear as can be for any more anything you need with that place or another. You've explained yourself and the situation pretty well. Hope I have, Tom

sorry for the delay, here's the entire deal on my pcv problem. I picked up my car on May 5th. drove home about 30 miles as I made the turn onto my street my oil light came on, (the red one that shows a picture of the oil can). my house is the second house so as I entered my garage, it was like my car dumped oil everywhere. Ill try to attach pictures. No oil in my drive on on the road in front of my house. I had made 1 stop on my way home and when we checked this location there was no oil in the driveway. My neighbor looked at the car and even under he saw no disconnected hoses and couldn't tell where the oil came from. So we decided to have the dealership look at the cause of this since it happened right after they had replaced the valve cover. I couldn't get assistance from the dealership till Monday, they didnt argue they had my car towed and a loaner ready for me. On Thursday the lead mechanic called and started he had looked at my car and was wondering if I knew I needed to have my PCV hose replaced, like he was just finding this issue that was noted on my paperwork as my pcv hose had a "crack ". He stated that the hose was the cause of my issue.I told him there was no way this just happened now Since I had been told it was ok to continue to drive due to my schedule and while I waited for the dealership to have a loaner available. He said he would clean it up and put dye in the oil and i could have someone with a light detect where the oil was coming from. Now the mechanic that I had scheduled to replace the pcv hose said that was probably not the issue due to the amount of oil not being a leak but ran out of my car. He said it may have been due oa gasket not being sealed correctly. He had offered to go with me to pick up my car if we could arrange a time that fit his schedule. I contacted the dealership mechanic left a voicemail he never responded with a good time to review this with us. So I went to get my car alone. Upon arriving the girl behind the counter ask if I had been contacted about my balance, I stated there shouldn't have been a balance due to the timing that this happened was right after they had serviced my car, she quoted me 255.00 But said the mechanic would review the bill and discuss the issue with me. When he took me to look at my car. The PCV hose was completely off. not cracked as stated in the original repair bill as if it was cut off. This was so obvious it would have been noticed when the car looked the day I drove it home. The mechanic ask why I didnt have them replace the hose, I stated that they wanted to charge me 386.00 when the part was only 75. and because they was allowed to charge that issue separate from the warranty work at such an outrageous labor fee I chose to have the work done elsewhere. He then said that was wrong of them and I should have contacted him directly and he would have made sure it was completed much cheaper. I have no Idea who the hell this man was before Thursday, I told him that GM had even gotten involved and couldn't get the rate reduced. The mechanic said the only thing he did was wipe it down add the dye and drive it. He stated he never removed any parts or checked how the valve cover was installed. Here is my problem with his statement in the initial picture I have after the service, you can see spots on the outside where the sealant was. And on the second visit where he insist he didnt remove anything the sealant is in a different area. Impossible if he never removed the cover. He stated there was no service charge and once i had my hose replaced i could bring it back and he would clean up all oft he oil under my hood. I went to turn in the loaner keys and they tried to charge me 150.00 for a tow bill. That was eventually removed also. Does this sound fishy to you, A dealership wont lower or remove the initial labor fees, but doesn't hesitate to waive charges of 255.00 when they say they are not at fault. I drove the car over 75 miles with the hose disconnected and not a drop of oil, How can that be if the hose disconnection was the issue. I'm a single female with limited income and I don't trust this dealership to have done the work right. I don"t even know if the valve cover was even replaced because i'm afraid to have it checked independently due to voiding the warranty. Good news is Finally the pcv hose is no longer leaking and my service engine light is off no thanks to the dealership so now I can get my car inspected. This site won't let me upload photos. I can send them another way if you like

This is hard to follow now. Easy with run-on sentences, readers can't follow that easily. * You had a warning light (red oil can) and drove the car anyway. Hindsight if I didn't already say that alone would void everything. * All hell then broke lose with who was responsible for what after unknown or unverified why - a hose, a seal and a crack mentioned valve cover or hose I'm lost? * Everything was a fight about how expensive it was - agreed most PCV real problems are not all the costly. ********************************************************* We need to end this now if you aren't going to go legal with this with no satisfaction from dealer on up it's working now just cost time and the money but unknown lurks what permanent damage may have occurred from originally driving it with a warning light that is clearly listed to shut engine off right away or severe damage may occur - read that in any owner's manual. ******************************************************** You aren't happy with the mess nor the dealership's help or lack of help. Perhaps now have an independent shop just check that the car is OK right now - all hoses where they belong and whatever this sealer stuff is (that's a no-no for fixing anything) is all about. If fixed and OK to carry on I guess just do so and put this behind you. Not happy with that dealership is fine you don't have to go back there. *********************************** Rec'd your private message about posting pictures. You can if you use a hosting site then a link to the pics there. This format isn't picture friendly for most and never was -- IDK why but never worked well here even for me. Good luck now. Check independently all is OK and either go legal for compensation for this nightmare or just move on and try not to allow this type thing to happen again, Tom
