Hey.. I have a Vauxhall Vectra 1997 SRI Estate & I'm having problems starting it from cold. It recently had a new cam sensor because it was cutting out after it had been running for a while (after half hour or so) But now it only does it when I first start it in the morning & then it runs fine. I took it to a garage and they said it needed a choke sensor which Vauxhall tell me it doesn't even have! So I'm a bit confused, any advice? :)

I don't know the car at as they don't sell them here but it should be fuel injected by 1997 but I can't say for sure. If fuel injected it needs to sense engine temp to determine how much fuel to deliver at what engine temp much like a choke idea. Sensors for that are usually right near the thermostat and called here at CTS = coolant temp sensor.

Gasoline engines need extra fuel for cold starts and if a carburetor with a choke might be electrically controlled but I doubt it. Best I can suggest - others here may have other ideas for you and if troubles ask locally from a real shop what device enrichens fuel for cold starts is what I would do. As said I can't get my hands on much specific about that car. Could be all wrong and it's something else but when something is cold only it's usually less fuel than it needs for a short time till warm,

Thank you, I really appreciate such a detailed response! I can see from the manual it does have a temp sensor so I think that probably is right.. I think a different garage might be the best route as I've just paid £600 for a cam sensor & 2 tyres (Wouldn't have bothered but 3 months ago the head gasket went and that cost 700 Shocked ) Sooo having spent so much I was a bit concerned when the manufacturer said they don't have a choke sensor.. Thanks again :)

Thanks for the kind words. Principles even though I've never seen this car are similar to many cars. You can test the sensor with an ohm meter and don't have the chart handy by putting in your freezer and watch the ohms change when you take it out and even dunk it in hot water.

Usually a fairly cheap part and now because you had a head gasket job it might be a wiring issue or the plug doesn't get a good connection.
