UPDATE: Plugs/wires/cap/ignition(<something,ran hand in hand w/ the tune up parts)...Timing was fine. My nephew did say something about the car was carboned up so bad that it had like a ball of black somewhere in his finding in the motor(in town driving,LOL)...He's not here, so I am trying to explain and define the best way I can. Could not test the compression w/ a tester being no one rents them out anymore(financially strapped at the moment)....I'm sure a few other tweeks were done, but he's not here yet so not for sure what else so far.....But, now comes the strange part...... I wasn't here when he tried to start it....But, he located me and said he got it started and asked if it always ran so rough, the motor sounded bad I guess, but he did take it for a test drive, he said by the sounds of it and the way it drove that definetly got issues, he said he would be over later to continue on it......Later on yesterday(3hrs later)...my son, which knows nothing of cars stopped by and decided to start it to hear what it was doing...The car sounded just like it did before all of this happened started up like normal, no sounds of missing, actually pretty smooth -He ran it down the road and back and he said it ran better than before the water hole ordeal. When my nephew got here later, we started it again, and he looked shocked, he said it didn't sound like that when he started it the 1st time or test ran it the first time, he said it was rough definitely thought by the sounds of it that there was reason to say it's messed up and now to hear(exhaust is a bit louder) it sound smooth, still got the lower end ticking sound(weak lifter) as it always had, but we ran it up to the gas station and put some gas in it and some stuff to take out water in the gas in case there was a issue. It seemed to run and sound just like before, but the (check engine) light is on, which wasn't prior and we noticed that we can see some smoke coming out from the lower part of the motor as if oil was spilled and was burning off, which although it did have as slight oil leak prior but never smoked like that...."maybe its just burning off some junk from the water hole?" We can hear a slight noise like a soft once in a while clunk or knock, you really have to be listening for it to hear it, which it did do something like that prior and although many people stated lower end moter sound, a couple other people states its my alternater making that sound, as well as when it would make that soft clunk that you could feel it in the alternater when touching it(possible bearings going bad). We plan to change the oil today, although it is not milky, but even my nephew said the same thing I did, that it looks too light and thin to not have water in it(even though other mechanics said it was fine, as well as a couple othr people)..My gut feeling it wasn't and my nephew tend to lean towards my theory as well.....Ok now a few questions: Why would of it started up and ran so rough and act like it wasn't running on all 6 cyl, and after he test ran it and it sat for about 3 hrs later it started right up and sounded smooth, ran great? Any ideas of why check engine light would be on? If I take it up to Auto Zone to have alternater tested, any other tests suggested? Is there a good chance that the motor could still seize up? Anything else I should have done to the car besides what has been done, or does it sound like its back to normal? P.S You guys have been great!!!!!!!

Thumbs UP! This sounds great. Long thread but it happens as necessary. IMO - this poor car went from ho(operating temps) to shocked with water alone can and will shed greases off outside of parts, even junk inside of some parts so dependant on just how much and where. The check engine light would be on if it ran lousy for a time and seems it did then later cleared up. Why remains guesswork but probably did get some junk in the wrong places and some moisture as well but not enough to snap the engine to bits which is sounding like it didn't - awesome. Good move to change out oil. Watch this car like a hawk for fluid levels and proper brake operation and any new funky noises. Have to guess as it really can't be known what assorted things got a water overload. Brake items, bearings and things here or there throughout don't like being submerged but are pretty much water resistant vs water PROOF - a different category. Not sure if water could have entered fuel system and if so would have to possibly thru evaporative emission something somewhere but doesn't seem it was like the total flood car where you just give up. From the notes so far I say use it with all caution and attention to anything that doesn't seem right. If running very well and exhaust doesn't smell funny right now wait just a short time to check for codes with the check engine light on that is possibly about to reset and go off (no light) if it gets enough time and cycles of start to running without failures noted should. Get readings anyway if practical but the history should be strongly considered for possible false alarms now. Repeat: If not running properly but mostly OK code(s) may be real and something in need. Tis a bit early but would love to hear of you driving by the shop when this is known all done with and put a video on YouTube of the looks on their faces! Hang in there. HT - She sought the help from the first suggestions she got when it was towed out before coming here at all and had NO HELP. In fact more like help that made matters worse plus dammed it to a lost cause without much/any real evidence, Tom

The ignition was wet and the more they tried to start it, the more flooded it got. Glad to see this resolved. I wouldn't bother returning to that shop to do any business. They obviously don't know what they are doing. Oil with water does look like coffee with a lot of creamer in it. Thin oil is as HT stated from gasoline, which is from all the attempts to start it with the bad ignition parts. The fuel injectors were still firing and it probably ran like crap for your nephew because it was so saturated with fuel. Tell him we believe him on that and it makes sense, so he doesn't need to be doubting himself or anything.

ONCE AGAIN "THANKS A MILLION GUYS".....Got oil changed today, had them chk a few things at the oil change place that may of needed greased. It's running great!!!! I'm glad I followed my instincts and searched for others oppinions and didn't listen to the garage mechanics and throw in the towel. The check engine light isn't on anymore. Did go up to the garage that told me it was toast and asked who worked on my car and it was the first guy I spoke too, I asked how they checked for the compression, and he told me they never did,(which the owner stated they did) the owner and this guy was the one that looked at it. He said that they just listened to it while trying to start it and he said something was badly broke internally in the lower end and figured it wasn't worth trying anything else at that point....Of course when my nephew asked him if he could come out and listen to the car, he had the dumbest look on his face and especially when my nephew started it up...LOL...Of course he still stands by he thinks something internally is wrong with the car cuz once in a while you will hear a slight noise, obviously he to try to cover his tracks, I asked him about taking the plug wires off, never said why and intantly he said one was ripped( I never mentioned they were ripped and mangled prior to his comment)....I will never return there again.....The car runs better than ever!!!! But, I am still keeping a close eye and ear on everything thing with it. My nephew done a great job and he followed with things here and by calling his dad to help him through the steps of things he was unsure of......Defintely got this website marked as my favorites......Thanks again!!!!!!!!

Happy to see you got it back on the road. Even happier to see you drove it to the shop that said you needed a new car and proved them wrong. Maybe, just maybe, they might rethink how they are doing things around there before they really bury themselves in pissed off customers. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

So i would like to start out by saying i am the nephew and want to thx you guys for all the help. And to whoever the guy was that said to use a blow drier and i would prolly been running along time ago that was a great idea but it would of not been the case as the plugs were shot and distributor cap and rotor was also shot, And i did check the plugs first to see if there was spark and there was no spark with the old plugs then with the new there was spark but it was really weak then when i got the distributor cap and rotor off i could tell right away that was why it was weak. So i knew it was going to fire up when i got that all put back together. just when it started was what worried me. I have built a few turbo motors for honda and eclipse's so i got a pretty good back ground in motor's but im sure as you all know turbo motors and high rev ones at that when they go you are just either getting a new motor or doing a rebuild. But anyways back to my point when it first started it sounded and acted like it had a dead cylinder .But like she said when i went back over there it was fine now i dont know if it was just like someone said about fuel and the oil or something cant remember what you said for sure or if it was because the egr line was so plug up and the hole on the intake was so built up that it was not working at all not sure if since i clean it that the computer was trying to fix it self and that might of been why it was running like Sh!t at first but all in all the car is fixed and you guys helped big time.And this is the first none foreign car i have ever worked on kinda a pain in the ass lol P.S would of been done alot fast but im used to hooking up laptops to cars and figuring out whats wrong and having the right tools and that stuff i do not have right now Removed all the Autozone links

One thing that i think was missed is a wet wiring harness or distributror. Your relative should be able to disconnect most connectors one at a time and dry with some spray sold for drying wet wiring or use a hair dryer on WARM setting . Do as many sensor plugs as you can as well. Take dist cap off as well. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH
