Puncture unrepairable???? Sign In

Hi all, new to the site and to be honest only because I feel I need to ask a question about punctures. As the title suggests I pulled into a national car repair centre who shall remain nameless but who does things quite kwik to be told they could not fix my puncture. They advised that I should get a new tyre. I was less than happy as the tyres were under a year old and new one cost me £140!! Their reason was that the nail punctured at an angle so they could not repair it stating something to do with the drilling restrictions on the angle. Is that right? Am I justified in feeling I have been conned into buying another tyre? I have kept the tyre (with nail) in the hope I can show it to someone else and get some confirmation either way. Please help, if it is true I shall accept but if not, I intend to challenge this in whatever way I can. Thanks for any help or for putting my mind to rest. VB

This will be subject to opinions based on observations and exact location of the nail wound if you will. If this tire can still hold air without a bulge where nail is or was AND punchure was in tread area not sidewall most here (US) would attempt to fix it. IMO no fixed nail type puncture is ever going to be as good as new for the total life expectancy.

There could be local laws on what you should fix or not?? Assorted ways known to me, plain pull nail, tool the steel with a special awl and insert a plug. That or take tire off and patch from inside up to for extreme measures for a hay wagon or something just put a tube in it.

I can't second guess a place looking right at it but never thrilled with a fixed tire like that and would mark it as the fixed one inside and out of sight if ever a problem again would check that one first.

Problem is if thru steel it is, will be or was exposed to moisture which can cause early tread separation problems.

Difficult to say on this. Some people plain don't believe or want a fixed tire on their vehicles at all never mind if someone will try,

Thanks T. The nail was in between the tread in the middle causing a slow puncture of about 10 bar deflation overnight, no bulging either. There was no mention of bylaws which I think we don't have here in the UK, it was all about "we can't drill at that angle" etc. thanks anyway for the info. VB

I'll beat this up a little more for you. A first line shot for a plain plug showing a kit looks like this...

With that type you would pull the nail out noting whatever angle. Tool on lower left would be inserted into same hole, same direction and spun clockwise actually make that hole bigger and hopes of making a "cow lick" out of steel such that barbed ends if any are unlikely to mess with the repair. I don't use a drill where nails were and actually never saw that approach for this type repair.

The second "T" handle tool would then hold one of those rubbery rope plugs with some rubber cement as lube and follow in with that with plug in a loop. If successful tool will pull out leaving just the plug. This with pressure even if blowing out while doing this in the tire. Follow if all seems OK checking with soapy water to verify it sealed. Then razor off all extra of the plug and check again.

Have this kit in my trunk and a 12v compressor if stuck out there. If that fails use the spare. If my own or a stranger in trouble I'd I would suggest and for myself take the dang tire off when possible and fix from the inside if I think tire can do plenty more safe miles. Knock on wood have never seen this type just blow out of the tire for a surprise fast flat but rather leak again slowly. Shoot, you could get another nail or whatever in no time also.

IMO - no fix will ever make a tire new again. It is and can be trouble with part worn good tires that one new one doesn't match wear such that for one nail fix two new tires can be suggested.

If you seek another place to check out the tire and fix it just know it isn't as good as new again and watch that one. This stuff stinks and like bad luck will happen to the newest and most expensive tires you just bought! No joy in it,

T

If tyres are under a year old, could you possibly have a warranty on them? Might be covered?
