Spare Tire in Trunk Sign In

I recently purchased four new tires for my Toyota Echo from Walmart with free lifetime rotation and balance. I have a brand new, full size spare in my trunk. When I rotate my tires, should I include the spare in the trunk? My question is if I don't use this tire in the rotation, do I have to worry about dry rot? I am also worried about if I include this tire in the rotation, Walmart may refuse to do the free 4 wheel tire rotation bc one of the tires (the spare) is a different make from the other 4 tires I recently purchased.

Re: Spare Tire in Trunk Sign In

So you have the original spare that was never rotated in such that all wore out about the same time to buy 5 more. It's now just a spare and too old to use for more than getting off the road to get another new one or pair that match.

Look at it. If somehow rotted or has been in a puddle of water pay attention - you don't have a spare that will hold air possibly! That's 1/2 the problem for road calls I will still do the spare has never so much has had air pressure checked and too flat to use if it was new. Tires lose air thru the rubber alone over time and not that much.

Fill that one and mark the date on it. Check it in one year (temperature counts*) it will be way too low most likely or be your next stop,

T
* Plain air will go up or down 1 PSI per 10 degrees Fahrenheit - check that, it's spot on..........

Re: Spare Tire in Trunk Sign In

I would leave it right in the trunk. It should still be in decent shape if it has been kept covered in the trunk.

There is no good way to include a 5th tire in rotation. Maintaining pairs is far more important. I managed tires stores for years and I always told my customers to just leave it in the trunk and when it is time for 2 tires, try to buy one tire to match the one in the trunk and put them on the car as a pair.
