My 2014 Ford Explorer gives an alert as soon as I start the engine that the engine coolant is over temperature, and starts the fan and runs it constantly. Is it safe to drive without damaging the engine short term, or something I need to have it towed to get fixed?

? First make sure it's truly full of coolant and on to look for temp switches unplugged probably on "cold" side of radiator should be opposite the upper hose on other side. It may have overheated before this and harmed it or somehow is failing to send proper temperature. Also, some designs will run fans if you choose defrost/defog or a mix of those with heat (floor ducts) only. Your question to tow it or not is up to you. If full and heater is working well run it full blast to floor if overheating for real it would go cold oddly has air in system assorted reasons most are not good news, T
