Tools for Mechanic Starting Out

Hello. My son has 3 month left of school for auto mechanics. I would like to get him some basic hand tools for Christmas. Any suggestions on must have tools starting out and most durable brands? Thank you!!

By far I like Snap-On but cost is the issue. How about let HIM choose and help pay for it?
Check out 2nd hand on line too, whole sets of things. Don't forget someday a huge roll around tool box - a must someday.
Tough trade -m the tools are a killer cost he'll have forever please don't quit the world needs great techs out there!

Snapon is nice but too much for a first timer.
Some decent brands at far more reasonable prices are S&K, Craftsman.
The first things he will need are
Combination wrenches (set 10mm to 21mm)
3/8 drive ratchet set with both deep and shallow metric sockets
1/2 drive ratchet set with both deep and shallow metric sockets
Full assortment of screwdrivers in both phillips and regular
electrical test light that reads both power or ground
Various hammers
That's only the most basic of basic
This is an expensive trade to enter.

Thank you so much for your replies. The tool box may be a graduation gift. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Gearwrench brand? The reviews are great but I don't know, the prices seem to good to be true. Also, he gets a discount from Matco. Right now some of their screwdriver and wrench sets are half off.

In short - costly at best. This alone as costly as a bachelor's degree.
Last suggestion is don't do it for the $$ you'll be disappointed. If you are meant for knuckle busting this is for him, he won't fail,

Gearwrench is popular with specifically the ratcheting box wrenches. I don't know what else they make or the quality.
Matco is decent quality but expensive. If you triple the actual cost and then take half off, it's still too much.
The thing is all their tools are made by someone else. Everything you find with a Mac or Matco name on it can be found online only with the actual manufacturer's name for a lot less money. The big difference is the tool truck gives you a payment plan and you have to pay for it in full if you buy it online. You pay dearly for that credit and convenience.
