ase tests Sign In

hey all, i'm new to the forum. i'll start by saying i went to nascar tech in NC about 4 years ago but didnt have the $ to finish classes. i've been on a huge detour since then involving marriage, kids, the army and other jobs and i finally see that i should have stuck with the automotive mechanics side of life cuz i enjoyed it. anyways i didnt do much research and i guess never asked the right questions but i only recently found out that i dont need the actual diploma or paper stating i completed trainning to take the ase test. i am going to go back to school to get an AS degree in auto mechanics but i want to start taking ase test to help me get my foot in the door at a shop cuz no one will give me a shot as even a lub tech cuz i dont have the experience or the certs yet. i only plan to take two test the first go being the brakes test and i think the other is on suspension.

can anyone tell me what i should read up on or look into most that will help me on my test, i forgot a lot of real specific info cuz i went through combat medic trainning in the army and i just havent used what i learned four years ago much.

any other tips that might help would be appreciated.

Mitchell manuals makes some good study guides for ASE testing. Although you can take the test, you cannot get certified until you have 2 years working experience in the trade.

i know about the required work experience but i figure maybe a passing test score on paper would help me land the job i need for the work experience.

do you know what the brakes and suspensions test consist of? am i going to know a great deal on diagnosis or mainly adjustments and repair or a little of both, i tried ase's web page but it only offered the practice test at $15 bux a pop and i'm trying to get every advantage i can to make sure i pass on the first go.

I highly recommend you buy the study guides. These tests are not easy. The brake test will have ABS questions along with technical hydraulic questions. The suspension tests will have highly technical alignment question along possible coverage on electric steering among all the basic suspension and steering questions. The study guides have sample tests and you will be shocked the first time you take one.

These are the ones I use every time I recertify. Don't skimp on the study guide.

If I remember right I believe ASE does give credit for automotive trade school and college classes taken. I think it was 1 year credit for every 2 years of classes taken....

When I took the first round tech school counted as experience - then called NIASE before they dropped the "NI."

You don't need to take them all. If still as was there were groupings like "Front End" - "Brakes" and so on.

Suggest you know your terms. Would be awful too mess up because you didn't know "Camber" from "Caster" and how they effect steering and tire wear for front end test.

Get the study guides as they will give you good info and sample tests so you know what to expect,

They dropped the "NI" cuz no one knew how to pronounce it............lmao
I remember hearing 3 different versions never really knowing which one was correct.

Laugh - In one second I just pulled out an original round patch - Orange, Blue, and White only with the gear and never mind abbreviated they squished in all spelled out "NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE EXCELLENCE" in the center.

Teachers would call it like your nick names

"Knee A See"

Never could find a pic of that as a logo out there,
