The rules/laws on transferring a plate from one vehicle to another are going to wildly vary place by place. Most would have some grace period but doubt a month.

Lost the link but look up the DMV rules for your exact location or contact your insurance company or agent. Where I live, MA you have 3 days if the prior vehicle is sold to use next vehicle. Then within 30 all taxes and title fees paid up, proof you have insurance to drive it for your location all in order or the penalties are up there with murder! Lose car instantly and daily storage fees while you fix it all up.

TMK, NH is the ONLY US state that does NOT require insurance but you need meet a wild criteria and ZERO traffic violations or accidents ever on record and can't leave the state legally on a public road with it.

Some things get so local you can't park the next car/vehicle till you have this done in certain places like on street parking anywhere around Boston for example,

NO!, you cannot use someone else's license plate for ANY period of time.

Any grace periods allowed in some states only apply to transferring your own license plate from a previous vehicle to a new vehicle and even that varies from state to state. The law also has some specific requirements in that you usually can no longer own the previous vehicle that you are transferring from and must carry dated purchase papers with you.

Insurance has to be transferred immediately.

Missed some specifics on this. I can't imagine you or seller leaving a plate on a vehicle without proper papers ALREADY completed or vehicle is still the responsibility AND owned by prior party!

If this isn't right you don't even own this vehicle right now and may have really messed up and so has seller. About the only thing I can think of is a pretty scary agreement from seller that you can use the car in their own name till you do it which short of renting a vehicle this makes no sense at all.

Yikes - this has to be all messed up. Do you even have papers and proof you bought this at all? Did seller even own this car and you hold proof? Start over with seller is probably a must and don't use this vehicle till you have all the ducks in a row or this was a total scam. Double Yikes!

Wow! You may not own this car at all and still be responsible for anything that happens to it

Re: just bought a car... Sign In

the seller lives same state as iam, Arizona. it has a clean title and registration.
i work from 8-4pm just about the time DMV is open and they close on weekends(i dunno why)
but fo sure one of these days ill take few hours off work to have time to deal with the reg.
the reason i asked is that i am working on the car at night and after i install the parts i have to test the car around the neighborhood, cops might stop me, thats what im worried about..

Re: just bought a car... Sign In

It's YOUR responsibility to tend to this on DMV hours in person for some things - here you can do some by phone on their web-site but not so much a new vehicle to YOU.

Dealers here and insurance agents use couriers. Some motor clubs can help with some of this. Right now it's not (IMO) possible that it is yours to drive on a public road at all.

AZ showed it had a list of things to do. Inspected same as here but varies as said still. Here if it failed anything to do with safety the car right then and there get's red "R" sticker and really you are supposed to tow it right away till it's that far. You get a black "R" if it fails emissions but only up to a point and 30 days to re-inspect and pass.

It still has to have taxes paid and be legally in your name -- a new title will come later (if like here) to you that YOU own it and then can sell it or it ain't yours yet. However it's done you get legal papers and legal inspection as AZ requires for the vehicle or thing in order or NO you are not allowed to drive it.

Yes - I've seen some plates go with cars or things. That's either more paperwork or a form but why would a seller take on any more responsibility for the thing especially any liability for accidents, parking tickets and more?

This is YOUR responsibility to do. If absolutely no way you can do it ask insurance company, police or a lawyer if you can assign just the courier work at least for you if you must and bet so be in person for some things,
