I bought this truck to try & make a buck. Good shape for an 88, runs strong, rebuilt trans, air needs attention. I'm putting rear axle seals in, right side bearing was bad so I replaced it, seals were bad, replaced, shoes were oily so they were replaced . The pinion seal leaks and I can move the pinion up & down about 1/8 th inch. O K, so the bearing is probly bad. Will I be looking at all the set-up hokey pokey ( using dyes & dial indicators to set the match on ring & pinion gears) or possibly a straight forward take old bearing out and replace with new & a new seal? Not much on the crush washers and such. New owner may inherit this project.

I'm afraid you can't do anything back there without dealing with the crush spacer. If you change only the outside bearing, you can do that without a real lot of hassle but you will have to change and torque the crush spacer. You'll have to use something to pull the race out and that could be tough without removing the pinion but it can be done. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That's what I thought Hammer, if one bearing is bad, the other can't be far away. If there is play in the pinion- up & down, it is moving inside both bearings- not just the outside. Think I'll pass on this one. Thanks. (what's the oa? can't delete! ( oa )

Actually, it's usually the smaller outer bearing that goes bad. the inner one usually survives.

O K, There ya go, ya tweaked my interest. A person can't be afraid of these things forever! Besides, I already bought the seal- before I checked the play. Will have to get a book for specks ( torque) and continue.
