98 Cadillac DeVille Starter Problem Sign In

I've had my Caddy for about a month now and it had a bad head gasket when I bought it. About two weeks ago the starter started to act up. It would take a few turns of the key to turn the engine after it sat for a few hours. Yesterday I went to crank it and it just made the grinding noise like the car was already running. Someone told me that it was the starter solenoid. So I was just wondering if it would be beneficial to just change out the solenoid and not the whole starter. It's a difference of about $100.

Any advice is welcome.
Thanks, SS

Definitely change the whole starter. When you see where this starter is you won't even want to change it once, nevermind twice. You have to remove the intake manifold because the starter is under it.

Yeah I did it. It wasn't all that bad maybe an hour and a half. But, once I got the old one out, the ?bell? was shattered. There was one large piece lodged in the flywheel and about a square inch and a half unaccounted for. So hopefully that doesn't cause more problems but, I have to change the head gasket in a couple weeks anyway so we were going to fish it out then.

Before you tackle that head gasket job, be aware that this engine has a known problem where the head bolts pull the threads right out of the aluminum block. That's a major problem if that is the case.
