98 eclipse timing issues

1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 High mileage lost the idler pulley and chewed the timing belt up...Replaced with a timing kit lining up all marks but still severely out of time. First time with this...any advice? WhoDat45

Just get one cylinder on TDC and blow air into it and listen to the air come out throttle body! That or just one actual compression test on one that reads so low you know it can't seal, T

What Tom is describing is called a leakkdown test and they make a tool for doing that. This is an interference engine and it very rarely survives a belt failure while the engine is running. I understand the replacement schedule, but I just bought the car and was in the process of reversing all the neglect it suffered at the previous owners hands. When it happened it was surprisingly quiet. The car just shut down. I had someone tell me that my timing marks may be " 180 out"....is this a possibility or am I looking at a head job here? WhoDat45

All the marks were lined up perfectly and its barely running at all so you guys must be right....Not sure if the car is worth the expense of having the heads reworked....not a total stranger to a wrench...... is this something I could tackle myself?....................speaking of tackle.....GO TEXANS!!!!!!!! I don't know the extent of your ability and you already noted it had high mileage. Repairing it may be a bad decision because the lower end may be too weak for a reconditioned top end. A used engine may be your best option in this case.
