98 malibu steering rack

I have been working on cars for about 25 years (5 years at a dealer back in 80"s) have not done a steering rack in a few years.I just picked up a 1998 chevy from a kid that will not steer.you turn the steering wheel and the wheels move maybe 1 or 2 inches.when putting it on the flatbed i was able to move the passenger side wheel in like 2 inches by hand and it felt like something was stripped inside the rack,so im assuming the rack is bad ,he said he hit a curb and the steering went out.my question is has anyone done a rack in a 98 malibu and are there any tricks to getting it out ? thanks Dave

Nothing fresh in my mind here, but it seems like if you drop the back part of the cradel down the rack will come right out. Again this is not for sure.
