I live in Jersey, but have a brother in Arlington. What kind of mileage does the beast get and (smile\wink) does it have a factory installed remote? Or did you buy it yourself? Lee

First off it's no longer available. I got her a mint 89 Town Car and she has too much trouble getting her handicapped stuff in it and in the Suburban she doesn't need to fold anything up. She now wants to have them both. FYI, Suburbans get junk for gas mileage. My guess is 10 around town and at best 17 with steady highway driving. No add on accesorries or remote start as I would only allow for perhaps handicapped assist items. We looked at several new smaller SUV type vehicles but she had too much trouble getting in and out of them. When possible family takes her places in her car. _______________________________________ It's the wrong place for this on this forum but it's too bad carmakers don't seriously make a factory made vehicle for a growing number of folks who can still drive safely but have real troubles getting in and out of the car. When you are totally wheelchair bound you near must get these custom made vans that can lift a powered wheel chair then they are hard to drive because they are so big?? T

Just a guess, but the senior boom that is about to hit us hard (a bit late for your Mom and me, of course) is again changing the world we live in. We now have options like fashionable and portable canes, slings, casts, etc. How long do you think before they decide there is a market for handicapped-useable vehicles?

Just read that Ford has an assortment of packages to lay off 38,000 people as their sales are down and have been. I'd bet you they could and others make progress with a real hadicapped friendly vehicle. They must have all decided it wasn't profitable and I think they are wrong!! If these car makers are so smart why are they (some) in so much trouble?? T

Bottom line - and this is true all over the US and now globally as well. Corporate CIOs are very good at making money for themselves - they really don't care that much if the company they are running makes money - only that it have the appearance of doing well long enough so the CIOs can get theirs. They also don't care at all what happens to the people who work for those corporations. This has been true at least since the early 1960s when business was so reviled and the only people who wanted to get into the higher executive levels were the scumbags. They complain that there is no integrity at the worker level. I say, 1. They set the example and it is not a good one; 2. The workers have more integrity than the CIOs (I do not speak of our politicians at this time); and 3. That is also why the middle class is shrinking so dramatically. It's also the reason why so many formerly very good companies have disappeared. That's why the economy of this country is in trouble and has been since the mid-60s (and again, I am not talking about the stock market - although that is being so manipulated - by those selfsame CIOs and boards of directors, that the average person simply can't have any idea how much a company is really worth and how to invest wisely). I can see it - just wish I knew what to do about it - besides try to vote for the best person I can find (which, unfortunately, isn't saying much. Sorry for the ramble - I could go on and on. Thanks again for all your good advice on my Ford.

I moved the thread as this is interesting thread now. We should start a new one to make it more easily searchable. I did change the title and see if that helps. It's a worthy subject for an ever expanding site, T

The problem still is as I said earlier. US corporation CIOs are no longer particularly interested in the success of the corporation, only the appearance of success. If they were truly interested, someone in the Ford Lincoln Mercury corporation would be webcrawling to find all references to Ford in all these wonderful forums. They would come upon discussions like this and jump on it - because it is (or soon will be) the beginning of a very large wave that will create all kinds of new opportunities. Bet you something. Toyota will do it first. Unless, of course, some group of car junkies decide to create their own handicapped vehicle aftermarket (perhaps similar to the RV market) - and find a way to market it. Of course, they won't be in business for too many years before one of the large corporations buys them out to get rid of the competition and make themselves look good without doing anything but raking it off the top. This is a generalization, there are always exceptions, but very few of those exceptions don't get bought out within a few years. Lee PS (Carjunky smily fix) wonder why your images come in as red x's?)

Bet your bottom dollar that American car makers are watching this and other sites. The big three in the US has lost a lot of ground to companies like Toyota that still employs lots of Central and N. Americans. They really are the second largest auto maker by volume and Ford will become third. Do you realize how few so called American cars are made for left hand drive?? Virtually all of the foriegn cars design them for either!! The car makers used to target the young in hopes of getting life long repeat buyers which didn't work and they should wake up and realize that. Why not make that vehicle that is handicapped friendy and able to easily be customized for specific handicaps. The vast majority of compremised folks are coming -- call the "baby boomers" with money to spend and age alone is not the only cause of special needs but there is no doubt it's more common. Keep this thread going. This is a powerful site. Maybe we can make a difference, T

I thought you were going to make an independent thread out of this. It really would be a good discussion that is now masked by that Car Not Available subject - How about: Really Useful Handicapped Vehicles Not Available

Hey Carjunky - you say that thread. I did start a new one and either will work or just wipe out one but WWW.queen and I had quite an exchange going on that started at the "Bargain Bin" and I moved it in whole but I think many of us would not have found it so easily. I've worked on custom made vehicles with NO driver's seat and hydraulic ramps for wheel chair access -- that one for someone without use of his legs. The real point was with various problems that I don't think a single car maker makes a vehicle ready for custom work for specific needs. It was just a thought that I'm sure has interest out there and would be good for the site and the site may even attract sponsors for products. Seems like a win - win for all. Any comments on that welcome, T
