Jeep likes kigh test?
Hey all, Recently bought a Jeep Wrangler, 1997, 4cyc, 48,000 miles. LOVE IT! Jeep was serviced like a champ. Noticed that she knocked a lot. Got a tune up, no change. Tried high test, she loves it. Problem: cost of gas. Ive tried using octane boost with regular gas, works better, but still not the best option. Could there be something else wrong, or would this be common with that age jeep. Am I stuck using high test?

If it pings on regular gas, you will likely just have to use better gas. Doing an induction cleaning may help if it has any carbon buildup on the pistons. Normally an EGR helps with that but your truck doesn't have one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I think this somehow has high compression due to carbon build up as HT suggests and by the description of the pinging. It near certainly was made to run properly on 87 octane. Wrong plugs, carbon build up would be easy problems - well usually. '97 even as crude as it may seem is still an OBDII vehicle and codes may help to narrow down reason. For now if higher octane solves it keep using it but it could be corrected. Spark knock/pinging is damaging to engine so don't let it do that for long, T

For real? This thread was finished a month ago and Jeeps have always been built in America. Please, no foolish questions on older threads.
