Steering noise Sign In

Funny whistling sound from front end when steering is turned.Seems to be only when engine is warm.It is a high pitch sound,I have been told it is not a belt squeal.Car is a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire with about 45000 kilometers.A friend says something about "Rack and Pinion"causing it.Could this be dangerous ? I have been told it is expensive to repair thi.

This usually is a belt or pulley and less likely to be the rack and pinion. Both belt and the pulleys can get shinny with time and use and they make noise. There are special belts made to be quieter and I've had great luck with them.

As a test for the belt try some WD-40 on the belt and see if it goes away for a while. If that works just a good belt should solve it.

If no response take belt off and spin each pulley which should be about silent in hand spinning.

Also make sure there is enough tension on the belt(s) many are self adjusting but can give up working properly, T

Re: Steering noise Sign In

Have you checked the power steering fluid level? If low this could make the noise; the same fluid that is used for transferring hydraulic pressure throughout the system is also used for lubricating the pump.
Power steering fluid does not get used up as what motor oil can be, so if the system is low, you’ll have to check for leaks. I’m also not talking puddles of fluid; the whole system takes less then a litre to fill from empty. A small leak over time will slowly lower the level until the pump begins to make noise.
