I am a newbie to this forum and as newbie as can be to auto repair. Want to purchase some tools this winter to do some basic work in the Spring (i.e. brake pad and rotor replacement, shock replacement, oil change, etc). Bought a nice used Norco floor jack and jack stands. Looking to buy some open end wrenches (combination, swivel, etc.????) and a corded or cordless impack wrench. My question is, should I stick with Sears, Lowe's, etc. or do you think the quality of Snap-On or Matco is needed? I heard when ratching with the latter you feel the ratchet won't slip like cheaper tools. Also, how much torque would I need from an impact wrench to remove lug nuts? I saw, what looked like a decent corded wrench, for $189 that had 240 ft/lbs of torque. BTW - I own a 2002 Toyiota Sienna and a 2006 Honda Civic, if that is any help. Thanks for any help you can offer, Howard

The impact you describe should do ok for you. The lugs should not be much over 100 lbs. As far as tools for home use, in my opinion, Sears are as good as any. They are about 1/2 the price of tool trucks and have same warranty. Only difference is you have to go to Sears to replace them. But if you buy Snap-On, you got to chase a dealer down to replace tool. Sears has a pretty good mechanics set for a reasonable price. Go out and look at them, purchase what you can afford and add to it as time goes on. I have been doing this for well over 40 years and still buy pretty tools. Now I just buy what my techs call toys. But I have more invested in my toolos than I do in my house, car, truck and boat. It adds up. Good luck and come in and visit even if you dont have a problem. Oh, yeah----Welcome to the forum. way2old Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
