Windshield fogs up.

On my ZX2 the lower part of the windshield fogs up even during good weather. It happens sometimes when driving at night and when going from sea level up to 4000 foot level. There are no leaks in the cooling system and the heater core is fine. Is this normal for a ZX2?

A heater core would be a sticky fog. It's possible that there is water in there that doesn't get out or dry. If you have A/C does it drip out water (normal) on a humid day? Drain for that might be plugged,

Yes, it does leave a puddle of condensation under the car. Could it be that it is not draining enough and some moisture is left inside.? This fogging does not happen all the time, but more often then not. It also happens when the A/C has not been used for a few days.

If the A/C condensate (water) is draining on the ground that shouldn't be it right now. There could be a problem with the fresh air in ducts where air comes in to the cabin near the wipers. That gets full force rain and still must be able to give you air and it may be holding some water up in that system. For that I would run a garden hose down there and it should take it all without getting any in the car or perhaps that would flush it out??
Another possibility is the windshield has a leak. Has it been replaced? They can leak in funky ways and get things wet that shouldn't be. The test I would do for that is use quality painter's tape and seal it sides and top and give it time and see if the problem stops. If so get the windshield sealed up. Do use painter's tape or you will battle for 1/2 a day getting sticky goo off of paint. That sounds like a silly test but I've made some good bucks diagnosing noises and leaks that way.
How old is the car and what's the general rust condition?

Tom, the ZX2 is a 1999 and just turned 24,000 miles on it. No rust anywhere. I bought it new. It has never been in the rain and never washed. I just wipe it down with a damp chamois after each use. Sounds crazy, but I have several collator cars that I take care of the same way and its a habit. Actually this fogging situation has been an event since the car was new. I would have taken it back to the dealer, but I didn't really want the car torn apart unless the situation was a serious problem which so far has not caused any real concern other then this fogging that once I turn on the defroster it disappears. None of the other cars I have do this under the same driving conditions. I have no windshield leaks and the car is dry inside. No moisture on the floor or near the dash. It seems the fogging occurs when there is a temp change like from sea level to higher altitudes. A/C works fine as does the heater and no fluid leaks when driving or standing. Strange huh?

There may be nothing to fix at all. I know of someone with their second Subaru something or other and they say it will do this but clears right up??
I lived in Denver for about a year and went into the mountains all the time and never had a problem. That's starting at 5,000 ft and going up to 7 or 8,000 ft but it's dry there.
I don't blame you for when it was new not having them tear into this problably to find nothing.

Yes, if I turn on the defroster it clears up right away and after I turn off the defroster the fogging does not return. This happens when I'am heading home in the mountains from the coast. Once I clear the fogging it does not return for the rest of the trip which is usually another 20 minutes. Maybe its a sudden outside temp change from the temp inside the car. However, sometimes when I drive around the mountain area (4000 foot level) I will on occasion get the fogging. Thanks for the help...........
