03 dodge ram 4.7L using oil runs fine no visible sign of oil leaks. what are possible causes. Truck has 200,000 miles on it ram 1500 2wd

Are you getting blueish smoke from exhaust? I've seen a few 4.7s that had pcv system issues causing them to burn lots of oil. ____________________________________________________ Willing to help, willing to learn... Rob

Thanks just changed the pcv valve.There is no blue smoke coming from exhaust . just changed the oil there was no oil showing on dip stick,i change the oil every 3000 miles

OK - all replies on target. Oil not showing on dipsticks may not be fatally low. Some will be off stick as little as 1.5 Qts on a 5 Qt capacity usually not fatal but scares you and should. If you don't check this manually each time you fuel up at the miles you are gambling IMO. If it is supposed to tell you to "check" oil not just low oil pressure that may not work so check it yourself. How long engines last before wear causes oil consumption still varies. 200K is a lot. Many never make that and some double that depending on routine care, service on time, quality of products used, care of how driven, avoided overheats and running out of oil, and good luck too. If this was sudden and you never checked at your 3,000 miles intervals you might not know if it was almost too low if you didn't check all along. If PCV or if you can see sludge on oil dipstick, under oil fill cap, PCV and hose maybe the oil wasn't high quality enough or running too hot too often IMO. What to do is watch it now like a hawk. If you plan another 100K out of it expect some expense and depending on truck's condition overall there is a useful life and dependable life before they get too annoying with stupid to fatal stuff or plain bull too expensive for what it is. You decide. Know the truck or any vehicle isn't just an engine. Every other part has gone that far too up to hinges, handles, locks, seat springs, upholstery and tons more - some quite costly. You could ask for a check out of all drivetrain parts or do it if you do, including compression, age of redone trans as it's overdo now, and other common areas as to carry on or part ways with a vehicle, T
