Ford Courier 1980/Mazda VC engine(new) severe post ignition occurs wherever ignition timing set,ie retarded or advanced. tried higher octane makes minor difference. Any advice?

This is possibly a carbeurated engine with mechanical fuel pump and with a new engine the only thoughts I have is that perhaps the spark plugs are too hot. It should be too early for this to be carbon build up. Shut the engine off in gear for now it should quit and if a standard trans you would have to use your judgement and not hurt the engine. I would put the timing where it says to be and make sure the plugs are right, T
