My son hit a BIG pothole while driving a 1994 Probe. He says it now smells like burning rubber and there is a groove in the tire. What should he have checked out? We live about 4 hours from him and aren't sure if it's safe to drive it back home to have our reputable mechanic check it out. Chicago mechanics are a bit iffy!

This just has to be checked out in person. If you could tell that the tire was the only thing damaged then you could consider using the spare (make a habit of checking tire pressure in those in all cars) but you said you smelled burning rubber so something could be rubbing from being bent and even another wheel and tire may not be the answer right now.

If you are worried about mechanics in the area you son is at then perhaps go to a chain tire place that would do alignment too as they should be well equipped to either fix it right there or know that it needs more work than common front end parts that might have been damaged. Who knows - it could need something straightened like for collision damage,

Thanks!
He's going to check around for a recommendation of a reputable mechanic. The groove is on the inside sidewall of the tire so it probably isn't safe to drive any distance. Thanks for the assistance!
