1996 Yamaha FZR 600.Battery new but Voltage after charge was 13.4.After running for while 12.8.Before charge 12.4.Fuel system very clean.I even replaced the fuel tap which was clogged and the fuel filter which was decent. The electric fuel pump seems to work fine(sounds good).Cleaned all the vent lines and carbs. The cooling system works well.I live in Las vegas and it never gets beyond half way on the gauge. No history on the bike but I am sure it sat for a while.Probably after being dropped on the left side.Crazy

Next time it does it try opening the tank and see if there is a whooshing sound, air being pulled in. I think on those bike they have a charcoal canister that they use to vent the tank. Also of times people will fill the bike right to the top and the charcoal canister becomes saturated with gas and unable to vent. Unfortunately if that is the case you will have to replace the canister.

some bikes in that era have a vacuum petcock if it does make sure the vacuum line is not blocked, kinked, broken or wedged between bodywork.

if it's manual petcock see if it will work in reserve when acting up. If it works in reserve you have have crap clogging the petcock valve.

12.6 is normal non-charging condition

the 13.4v was just a surface charge as a result of charging the battery.

Hey,I did remove the gas cap and it made a whooshing sound.I did spray some carb cleaner in that cannister and blew it out yesterday.Like I said I did replace the Fuel cock(not a vented one).Is there a way to bypass the charcoal filter to see if the sympton persists? I am sure it will take a week to order the new one.

there should be a vent line hooking to the tank you can take it off and plug the line with something. When you replace the canister try to only fill it 3/4 the way.

Hey ZMAME,It works thanks!I disconnected the vent line from the tank and the one to the charcoal cannister. My next thing are the valve adjustments.I do not have any tapered feeler gauges.I will try to taper my regular ones(cut, file, sand)or buy someUnsure. If I have to adjust the valves,my parts store said that they will trade shims if in good shape for free.I also thru the years have used black high temp silicone to make gaskets. It worked every time just do not over do it and let it dry over night.

Well Zmane the darn thing died again. This time it took 2 1/2 days of resting it to get it started.I have to try a new fuel pump.Perhaps the other pump is on its last leg?I did find a vaccuum/fuelpump tester that I will hook it up to.

It's quite possible that may be a the problem too.. but if you where getting suction when removing the cap like you stated, that issue also has to be fixed. It may have overheated the pump when it couldn't pull anymore fluid through too. Pump is cooled by the fuel flowing through it.

OMG,I just priced a fuel pumpMad.They want $700 for a OEM and $500 for a mitsubishi.I am shocked to say the least.I even priced the charcoal cannister........are you ready? Over $1,000.I did find a fuel pump off the shelf at Autozone for $40 and if and when I cut, grind the bracket down it will be the same diameter 2'' as the original. It even came with a fuel filter.I will address the Ca.Emission lines again. My son wants out(I can not blame him) but I am determined to get this baby running dependably.Anyway ZMAME I appreciate the help.Luckily I am in no hurry.I will miss out on this 80 degree riding weather and be in the 100 plus soon.

I finally found the time to install the $40 fuel pump.I have a 14'' chop saw that made easy work removing the unwanted plastic mount.I removed the tank mounted fuel filter and clamp and ran a fuel line from the fuel tap to the new pump's screw in filter. The new fuel pump fit into the clamp really well.I even used the same fuel line to the carbs!Tested great, now to see on long/all day test.Wish me luck.

SlyThe fuel pump was the problem.Put around 500miles on it with no problems. The dang chain needs adjusting often.I will have to remove a link soon to be able to adjust in future. Is there a reason why it grows?I installed a new chain and sprockets this year.
