I have a 1988 Chevrolet 1500 with the 5.7. Yesterday I was driving home and the truck decided that it wanted to almost stall out if I gave it any throttle. I could feather the throttle and it would go a little bit. I never reached 50 mph the whole way home. After I got it home and let it sit for a while, I started it (no problem) and could feather the throttle up to between 2k and 3.5k before the engine would cut out. If I tried to stomp on it, it would immediately die. This morning I went out and started it up and it ran fine for a little while. I took it down the street and back to get it warmed up and it ran fine until it got good and warm. At that point it decided to do the same thing as yesterday. I hooked up my scan tool and pulled off 6 different codes. They were open throttle position sensor circuit, vehicle speed sensor circuit, EGR, MAP sensor, Electronic spark timing malfunction and the O2 sensor. I have attempted to change nothing at this point because I have a feeling that all of the codes are related to whatever is causing the stall problem. Could it be that all of those sensors failed all at once? None of them are difficult to change, but I don't want to change them if they are not really bad. What should my first step be?

Who says the sensors are failed? The code simply means the computer saw a problem in the circuit at one time. That can be caused by anything in the circuit.. I would test the fuel pressure first.

Thanks. I wasn't sure of the first step, I just knew that I didn't want to start throwing parts at it with out a plan. Will test the fuel pressure this evening when I get home.

1988 - Yes to fuel pressure first then I'd move on to vacuum leaks and electrical plug ins all over especially ones exposed to the elements,

So I checked the fuel pressure and it read 10 psi (Haynes says 9-13, so it is on the low side but still in tolerances). I put a new fuel filter on it because I know it needed it. I have checked all the electrical connections and they are all plugged in. I have not tested for voltage yet, have to borrow a multimeter to do that. I am also planning on testing the vacuum system. I drove it after I replaced the fuel filter (just in case that was the problem, it wasn't). While the truck was cool it ran fine. Once I got it warmed up, it wanted to lay down every time I gave it gas.

Were you testing the fuel pressure while the problem was present? It doesn't do any good to read it when it's running good.

No, and that thought crossed my mind when it started to do its thing today. I am going to have to re-test it while it is doing it aren't I?

Note on just that. 1988 - shouldn't need to go nuts just check suspect ones not just for ones left unplugged as that would stay unplugged. I'm just thinking of the assorted stuff that takes a hit from heat, moisture, corrosion and grease (most are greased) that's gone.
Get your pressure first when problem is happening as discussed. Unplugging things may just upset it with more codes for the moment,
