i have a 1990 4runner,5 speed,4 cylinder, 146,000 kilometers ,it has a 4Y ENGINE, this is not a usa toyota, i am in costa rica where the car was purchased it has a bad hesitation, also , when i go down hill it backfires unless i engage the clutch, when climbing the hills i need to go up in 1st and 2nd gears. it also runs on when i turn it off if i have been using the aconditioner, it is serviced regularly, new plugs, plug wires, carb.cleaned and rebuilt, it really seems to run hot, i run with antifreeze coolant but it still runs hot, i am completely confused, the mechanics here are not trained as in usa, i keep taking it back only to be told it seems to run okay to them,, keep in mind most of them donot have cars!!! being a female i get the feeling they think i do not know anything about car mechanics, which is right but, i know when the car is hesitating ,it isn't only when i accelarate it is also when i am cruising in any gear!! when i asked the toyota dealer in the states he told me they have no information on it because it is a europeon version with the 4 Y motor the thought of getting stranded here in a foreign country makes me more than a little nervous any body have any ideas what about the timing chain/belt? it has not been changed ,could it be that? thanks jud

Timing belt is way overdue, change it. Folks are here to help as best we can. Sorry that I never see Euro or cars made for overseas. Help here folks!! This may be an exhaust problem. What equipment/tools do you have available? T

thanks, i thought the timing belt was overdue, my personal tool box contains 2 screwdrivers and a hammer!!! will they do the job???? a little humor!! well at one time my tool kit was complete, then everything was stolen out of the car so the above mentioned is what's left. i am in nicaragua now,the last time i was here had a problem with the carb. took it to managua to a so called mechanic, i left to come back to granada and did not think it would get here, the timing was so bad it backfired like a gun, people on the road were running for the ditches, probably thinking there was another revolution starting! okay so i've had the same mechanic in costa rica for 12 years, but think he's getting lazy, when i take the car to him all he does is change the plugs and cleans the carb.! i had the exhaust checked, nothing wrong with it. the hesitaion is bad enough for my passengers to comment about it! i need to return to costa rica in about 2 weeks,it is making me nervous to think of the eight hour drive with the car as it is. thanks again ,wiil change the timing chain/belt as soon as i get it to the mechanic in costa rica, parts are not easy to get here in nicaragua. but costa rica will have what the car needs. as i said when i was in the states i went to the toyota dealer but they have no info on that motor because it is 4y euro. i'm going to do some more searching on the internet to see if i can find any info for the motor. will let you know what happens jud

Dumb American here!! There are NOT choices of the cars you can buy here and by that I mean they meet the standards or are not sold here. Toyota sells cars world wide and is good at custom making them for their destination. Hey -- I apologise that I about can't know about an export car. Keep at it. Someone here may have some ideas. I'm interested and watching, T

I don’t have any firm info on the 4Y engine to confirm this but I don’t think it has a timing belt it has a chain. Regardless if it has a chain or belt I don’t think that they would be the problem. By the symptoms you describe I would be looking for a relatively large vacuum leak. Check all vacuum line connections from the motor to whatever device is being feed vacuum, things like the power brake booster. Have a listen for any form of hissing/sucking noise, under the hood, while the engine is running. I’m just guessing but maybe? Dan. Canadian "EH"
