I have a '90 F-350 box truck I bought from Hertz Rental last year that is now smoking (oil) till it warms up a few minutes. It shows about 335,000 miles on it. I don't drive it much--mostly use it to transport tools to & from job sites. Don't think it will pass emissions tests now. I see ads for overhauled 7.3 liter engines for these at $2950 here in Dallas/Fort Worth. Has anyone had luck with an overhauled diesel like this in general? (I'd do the swap myself, but don't want to take it on if the "rebuilt" diesels tend to be unreliable generally).

I have rebuilt many diesel engines and have had good luck. See if the rebuilder has a warranty and if so, how long. Any reputable builder should have at least a six month to one year warranty.
