1999 yukon shudders at 60 mph

I own a 1999 Yukon. Z28. 5.7. 167,000 miles. While approaching 60 pmh the truck will shudder and then downshift into a higher gear. The rpms will then be around 2000. When I slow down the shudder will go away. It will also go away going over 65 mph.Please help!!

That sounds like a torque converter starting to fail. What? What would wheel weights have to do with a torque converter? No - I am asking if perhaps a off balance wheel could be causing this issue. You pointed to the torque converter. Just trying to check all options.

A balance problem wouldn't be affected by shift points, only speed. If the problem comes and goes when going into to different gears, the odds are very high it's in the tranny area...

The way you explained your problem, you made it sound like it had something to do with what gear you were in. If that's not the case, then yes it could be a wheel balance problem. That would be described as a shimmy or vibration. Just so we are on the same page - this is a 4x4 automatic. The shudder seems more like the truck is misfiring at times. On the way home on a bumpy, slight incline at 35 mph I will get the "shudder". Once on a flat road it will smooth out. The other times when I enter the highway from a upramp the truck will be approaching 60 and the truck will begin to "shudder" and the tranny will downshift into the next lowest gear by itself. Once back up to 65 to 70 the "shudder" will go away. Now, would out of balance wheels cause that much of a drag that the truck would downshift by itself? New plugs, wires, cap & rotor last Dec. I have to agree with HT on this. Some problems can be real tough to pin down online. When you only get bits and pieces of info it really makes it near impossible to even come up with an educated guess. With the 1st post HT was right on the money with the diag but now throw in the lower speeds, bumpy roads & misfire and everything goes out the window. If by chance there was/is an SES & some related codes in the mix, then that would change everything yet again...... At this point about the only real thing I'm sure of is, it's not a tire problem, balance problems aren't intermittent.

I agree. This is a tough one for me and I consider myself a gearhead. The intake manifold gasket went out in December and I replaced it in my garage. If this gives you any indication of my capabilities. Appreciate your input. Thanks, Todd.

Let me bounce this by you - been thinking about this all day. 3 years ago on Christmas eve - all loaded with gifts and ready to go - truck would not start - cranked and cranked. Had it towed. shop said flooded - replaced cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Good to go. The following Christmas the truck - same thing. This time I replaced the plugs, cap & rotor. Good to go. Now its getting close to the holidays again - perhaps the dist cap is going again - This would explain a lot - my question is why would the life expectancy of the cap only be 1 year? What could cause this? Moisture? Vent plug clogged?

Well if it was my truck and I didn't have all the tools to check out the secondary, I would be tempted to go get an OE cap & rotor for it.... It's more money but I've had problems with brand new caps crossfiring, right out of the box (what is with ign parts with the brand name starting with B??????? lol). It's just a poor design and you'll never see the defect without a scope no matter how hard you look... While I was at it, I'd probably throw a set of a/cs in there as well....It would suck paying $100 to find out you had a bad plug..... While it's running I'd gently wiggle the connectors on the ckp & other sensors. Make sure it had good, stable fuel pressure...... If all that checks outs you'll probably have to take it in to get checked out

Morning update - On the interstate I was going 60 mph. Truck seemed to be misfiring. Check engine light started flashing. When it quit flashing the miss went away. This happened 2x this am. I also wanted to ask about the distributor cap. You said there was a design flaw. What do you recommend? Have they designed a better cap? I am on the 3rd one in 3 years. I want to make sure I get one that will last. Please reply. Thanks, Todd.

The check engine light confirms that we are actually dealing with a misfire. toddr - I'm retired long time now but still take care of two 5.7 R code Vortecs. These really want OE stuff. One a 96 w 82k other a 97 w 49k so miles aren't up there. Both run as new and did get plugs just because of age and have to do them again as they are rusting by sight but work and are Delco OE but not from GM. I'm going to bite it and pay the price from Dealer for the next set. Both in RustoChusetts got all four O2 sensors. They worked but the freaking cap where the wires go in rusts and wires can fall out dammit! I've dealt with same NAPA in town for probably 30 years. The ignition parts are starting to look like crap and they used to have good stuff. I go to Autozone too for oil on sale by brand I want and some cleaners and stuff but that's about it. Other stuff - NO. The joy of low price quickly fades with the misery of poor quality! The only stuff I can improve over OE for these is brake parts and some front end parts. So far just one Pitman arm and IDK why as I greased it myself since new every time I saw the thing! Who knows on that? Other: Don't let these run low on fuel as the pump really hates that! Can be avoided by never letting them get too low - usually, T

OE it is! Yeah, I did go to Napa for the last 3 dist caps and apparently the quality is crap. I appreciate the input Tom! Thanks, Todd.
