Greetings I have what I think is a 93(?) Chevy Silverado pickup truck. It is a beat to hell farm truck and is out in the middle of no where and we have lost the keys. Unfortunately thieves came on the farm while I was away getting radiation for a brain tumor. They stole a bunch of copper, batteries, radiators, etc.. I am still trying to get everything running and really need to get this running so I can get around the farm. They took a tool box where I had the keys. I don't really care if I have a key. Is there someway to break the key and locking mechanism so you can just turn the little wings in the ignition to start it? I had a truck that ignition broke from use and did this. From watching shows like COPS it seems like it must be pretty easy. I have had two brain tumors in the last few years. Between surgery and radiation I am no longer the sharpest tool in the shed, so pardon me if I seem dense or ask something dumb. If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it. I cannot imagine how much it would cost to get a locksmith to drive out to make a key and after all of my medical issues I just cannot afford to spend the money right now. Gregg

You could pull the cylinder out & just use a screwdriver. That cylinder just had a bolt that holds it in, it doesn't require a key to remove but you do need a few special tools to take the column apart.

Wow - that sounds pretty easy. I was told by a coupleof other people to stick a screwdriver in the slot and hit with a big hammer until it would turn, but that sounds like arecsipe for me to break something that is needed. Any idea where I could find detailed instructions on what to do? I did a search and did not find anything with very much detaila and none had pictures. After my brain tumors I get confused pretty easily so I would like to find directions that are idiot proof. My grandfather was a pretty good wrench and worked on alot of trucks. He died last year and left me all of his tools so I might already havethe tools I need. Thanx, Gregg

You just take off the steering wheel, that takes a puller. I've seen guys beat them off with a hammer or whatever but that can damage the column. Take the turn signal switch loose ( 3 screws) and remove the lock plate. That takes a compressor due to being spring loaded. Its held in by a snap ring. Once its off there is just a torx bolt holding in the cyl. The lock plate would be the toughest without the right tool.......Check out some parts stores....more & more are loaning special tools theses day... I saw one guy get the plate loose with a claw hammer, the shaft nut & a couple of 2x4s but that really looked like a PITA

I don't want to make a huge stink on this thread, but giving advice on how to get around starting someone's vehicle without using the key isn't something I would post on a site the public has access to. Not trying insult the OP, but how do you know that this ain't some made up BS story, so a first time thief can learn how to steal older vehicles. Heck, the OP could be the thief who is stealing all the copper and stuff from the farm and now wants to know how to steal an older truck. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Hell, they ask how to defeat Passlock all the time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
