94 1500 freeze plug replacement

I have a 94 c-1500 2wd 5.7 V8 at chevy. The freeze plug on the drivers side, behind the alt. and sterring pump has a hole in it. I have the alternator off but having hard time locating the four bolts on the power sterring pump, (have 3 loose), because of the pully. I was trying to loosen the pump and move it to the right to gain access to the bracket bolt just behind the top portion of the pump. Do I have to take the pully off in order to get to these bolt heads to loosen so I can eventually take the big alum. bracket off to gain access to the freeze plug ?? Knowledge sure does make life easier...Thanks for your help..Smile

Just looked at one that should be similar. No, take the whole braket and pump off together. The pulley on the one I looked at did not have access holes to get at mounts which some did or assorted vehicles. The pulley needs a special tool that may not work with it in place anyway.

The bigger problem here is why it needed this "freeze plug" (should be called core plug) in the first place. GM had a problem with Dexcool and rust was an issue. I wouldn't replace it with that but just use the regular anti-freeze to corrrect concentration AND add anti-rust additive. If one of those suckers rusted thru you can bet others aren't far behind and some you need to about pull the engine to do. For a two dollar part they can be a nightmare!
