I've got a 95 Dodge Ram 1500 with 256,000 miles. It's still a good strong solid truck, however in the past year the speedometer has developed the hiccups at random times. Whether I drive it all week or just once down the street, warm or cold, with or without the cruise control, the needle will begin to bounce down and rest at o. On occasion it will resume at the correct speed. All the other instrument gauges perform correctly and I just pulled the panel to inspect for burnt marks. The cruise operates fine. I've replaced both sensors twice within 6 weeks, because each time I did so it worked for a few days, therefore I thought I got a bad sensor, not likely 4 times in a row though. (For the record, yes, I am a blonde female so go ahead and laugh). I've avoided tracing the wiring and checking the computer for obvious reasons.

BTW - your "for the record comment means nothing" so let's proceed.

I doubt getting codes will help but would get them anyway and post any #s that might show up. ?? The cruise works but speedometer can cut out - hmmm? If the truck wasn't sending a speed signal I seriously doubt cruise would work or maybe miles and or trip odometer would screw up as well?

OK - you have it out but getting right to the needle could be a real pest to plain see how it's attached and if it could just be slipping or what plain physically not turning?

Eeek - without this being obvious and being intermittent will make it a real pest to be sure of much. I'll just say on my own wild arse guess that the needle or the item that turns it right in the dash is at fault especially if odometer is working and nothing else is wrong.

Now it's older but might ask around or search out shops or place that does work on these things local to you.

Tricky problem. Used might be of some help if you can find one to fool with that should be close to free at a pick your own salvage yard I would think if you can see how the needle and how it's driven from behind. Many are like watch repair,

T

Just a thought and need to know from you. Does this use a physical speedometer cable? If so that's the likely problem! Tom

If the cruise works perfectly, that's a good indication the sensors are good and the problem is in the speedo itself.
