Chevy 1988 truck 5.0 My truck will start and run, but once it is warmed up and you put it in drive or reverse it dies, it will not stay running. If you put it in neutral or park it idles fine. If you put it in drive and stomp the gas it will drive, but when you come to a stop sign it will die, unless you put it in neutral. We have replaced: rebuilt throttle body with injectors (2), air control value replaced, MAP sensor, TPS sensor. Any suggestions?

First, make sure you check thoroughly for vacuum leaks and make sure the EGR is closing all the way. If everything is OK there, then you may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

We have just replaced the ICA. We will try the EGR value, thanks for the advice. I was thinking it was a vacuum leak, but can't find one. We will try the EGR valve now. The guy at the local parts store said it might be something in, a transmission sensor, to the effect that it is making the torque converter lock up when it is in drive. I don't think that is it.

Don't just throw parts at it. Take it off and inspect it.

A couple of things: Have you checked the actual fuel pressure at the fuel rail? If you have pressure that is less than acceptable (I'm not sure on the PSI for that vehicle, so check your manual) then you may have a fuel pump or pressure regulator issue. The other item that you may want to look at is the cap and rotor, I have seen stranger things happen. If you are concerned about sensors, I'm sure that you can plug into the diagnostic port and do a check on it.....on that system you can sometimes jump your A and B port on the diagnostics, turn the key to ignition and then the system will flash codes for you. Once you get the codes (a 2 digit number) you can then work from there.
