My girlfriend's bought a 2000 F150 V6 that has a heat problem, winter is coming right around the corner and she needs it for the window, when turning on the heat it might go on for about 2 to 5 minutes and eventually it blows cold air and then it doesn't blow warm air unless the truck cooled down then same thing happened. i was wondering what the problem was, how hard is it to fix it.

Has the truck been using any coolant?? Has it been overheating at all or the temp going higher than normal?

There is a couple of different routes you can go.. From the original post it almost sounded like a head gasket was leaking & air binding the heater core but then you should be at least going thru some amount of coolant. If you have a T stat sticking open or partially open, the complaint will be, takes a long time to warm up & loses heat on the highway. You could try the maintenance route 1st, change out the T stat & coolant and see if that makes a difference... Also try feeling the heater hose when the heat is good & then check them out after it loses the heat & see if there is any noticeable difference.... Some of these will even set a code. Have the codes read & see if there is a P0128

Beware with that 4.2L leaking coolant from the lower intake manifold. They put the coolant crossovers right next to a couple of the intake manifold runners. When the intake gasket goes, coolant can go into those runners and fill the combustion chambers up with coolant. Next thing you know you have a part of a connecting rod hanging out of the oil pan. Had this happen to a customer's truck that was started up one morning after he brought it in for complaint of a slow start. It blew up in the shop and we had to sell him another engine. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
