post icon Key Lock Cylinder & Ignition Switch Sign In

I just replaced the key lock cylinder on my '96 Explorer Sport V6/4.0, it cranks without any problems but now it won't cut off. I have to pop the clutch to stall it and unhook my battery cables. I do have a new ignition switch but I wasn't able to change it out tonight due to lack of light and tools. Could the switch be the reason why it won't cut off, or do you think I may have bought a faulty lock cylinder? Unsure

What was the reason for replacing the lock cylinder? How did you replace the lock cylinder?

As I was turning the key I felt it snap, after that it was very loose and made it where you couldn't start the truck. To replace all I've done so far is pull the steering wheel cover off, used a screw driver to push the retaining pin and pulled the cylinder out. To put back in I just slid it in until the pin caught and then made sure all the positions were working, which they were.

Probably broken rack linkage between the cylinder and the switch.

Yep, HT probably hit it spot on. You can tell by removing the ignition switch. Then grab the rod that moves the switch. You shouldn't be able to move the rod when the key out of the ignition lock cylinder.

This is what usually breaks and is a lot of fun to change out:

That's what I was afraid of lol! It really sounds like it's going to be a pain and I don't WANT to tackle it, but I really have no choice in the matter...it's not going to fix itself, so it's time for this old girl to rise to the challenge Wink!

I'll let you guys know how it goes and thank you again, your help has been very much appreciated!!

Re: Key Lock Cylinder & Ignition Switch Sign In

Spent some searching for what you call it. "Actuator" was listed looked a lot like the one DS posted.

Ford part # F2DZ-3E723-A

Could be very fussy work. If you get old one out bring it with you. These things are usually lubed up also and would need some grease made just for that.

I do not have access to exacting procedures but at a glance will require steering wheel off and some assorted tools, some special just for getting the wheel off not sure how much can be rented?

I've done a couple and it requires extensive disassembly.

The hard part is the tilt ratchet springs. Make sure you get the service information. You have to remove the column from the vehicle and pretty much dismantle it, so you'll be dealing with the SIR system.
