Military Willys' jeep Sign In

4x4 racing have been popular in the Philippines lately and I became interested as well. I was able to get my hands on one of those Military Willys' 4x4 jeep. there is something bothering me with its engine. this jeep is amongst those old diesel engine cars that needed heaters for its start up. normally, it would take only a few seconds of heating the engine up and it will begin to start up, but nowadays, it would take up to 20 to 30 minutes before I could get it to start up.

anybody know whats up with this and what I could for it?

thanks

Re: Military Willys' jeep Sign In

You have kind of answered your own question. It's old. diesel engines are like gas engines, as they age they tend to lose compression. diesel engines start and run on compression (the pressure in the engine combustion chambers ignites the fuel) and most diesels have always required at least 300psi compression to start. this one is old and when cold the rings have shrunk causing lower compression than is required to start. when you are heating the engine you are not increasing compression but only raising the temperature high enough so that the fuel ignites at a lower compression. the only real cure is to re-ring the engine. parts may be difficult to find so i would personally just live with it. the thing will survive a long time it will just become more and more difficult to start. rick
